I will be in the ballearics, coming from Gibraltar on about the 24th May, anybody need anything from Gib? I'll bring it with me. I also have crew coming down from UK, anybody need something small bringing? spares etc. I need somebody there, to babysit my boat when I leave to go to work, somebody living there preferably, I don't want to put the boat in a marina for the three weeks I'll be away at work, due to costs! I will if I have to, but prefer not! I would like to leave her on a cheaper mooring/anchor etc. and have somebody living on board, basically as guard! The boat takes care of herself for most things, bilges etc. Anybody out there or know somebody? We can discuss payment etc, later, when I get there, anywhere in the ballearics. Thanks,
Colin Scott.

Colin,

I've just moved my boat ELJAY from Gib to Palma, but I had it in Gib for the winter (whilst I worked back in the UK) . You'll probably know all this from the pilot books, etc but from what I saw there is only one option for anchoring and that's an area just off the west end of the runway. You will definately need a competent boat sitter as the winds can get very severe in the bay (I lost a fairlead over the winter and I was in Sheppards Marina!). I didn't see many mooring buoys either. I would think its a marina only option - I paid about £5 a day in Sheppards for ELJAY (11.2m).

Welcome to paradise!
It's more and more difficult to find cheap places to moore around Mallorca.
There are four places I can think of right now:
- Pollensa Bay, just north of Pollensa Yacht Club is (was) very popular. I've heard that they intend to install buoys, and charge a daily fee. (to be confirmed)
- Puerto Soller on the North coast,
- Cala Wells just north of the lighthouse Cala Figuera at the western entrance into the bay of Palma,
- Illetas, ~2 nm south of the port of Palma, near Puerto Portals.

Sorry, I will not be able to baby sit your boat, being "very busy" at racing regattas and cruising during the months of June and July.

Nevertheless, You are welcome to have one or more cold beer(s) on board Patootie.

Have a good sail from Gib.

So there is no point in calling in on you early June, however will be in Palma after Gib. so look out for us in Club de Mar. There are enough fridges on the Aleutian to keep you a cold beer or two.

This is probably too late for you but there are very good public buoys in Puerto Colom and Puerto Petro on SE coast of Mallorca. Porto Colom is a big protected harbour, nice town, bus route to Palma etc. Porto Petro is smaller, take the buoys furthest from the marina for most shelter. I stayed at both places in June '02, no on comes to ask for any money. If they did it would be just a few euros.
