Hi all
I'm planning to Tercoo my cast iron keels and get some epoxy on immediately. I am baffled by the range of epoxy primers/paints/zinc rich/aluminium etc.
Can someone please recommend an epoxy product? and for two keels on a 27 foot boat, I suppose I'll have to buy 5 litres?
and for filling and fairing, can I just buy the microbaloons and mix them with the epoxy to make a paste?
Thanks in advance.

You will probably get as many recommendations as replies! I used a Hempel Hempadur product after blasting the keel, but I don't think the one I used is available now - It was the recommendation of the blasting contractor. On steel plate keels I have just done we used International, again the choice of the (different) contractor. Both worked well.

SML Marine Paints - Marine Paint | Boat Paint | Antifouling | AccessoriesIf I were DIY I would speak to these people about Jotun products.

I used to own a copy of the paint system used on offshore oil structures. The primer was a zinc rich one, then a mid and top layer. Every layer was up to 6 coats, probably OTT for a keel but it gives an idea that there is no such thing as too much.

I would do as Tranona says use SML, I have used them extensively since they came into being, a good few years now.
know their products and will guide you in the options available.
not over priced compared to a lot of the competition.

I have a steel boat

I grit blasted the hull to a gray colour then painted it with lot of coats of Epoxy tar.

This was in 2008 launched in 2009

Last pull out (2022) showed no rust on the hull below the wafer line.

The anodes show little wear so it looks to me that Epoxy Tar is protecting th steel very well

Another vote for SML, helpful, knowledgeable and fair pricing.
