Big deal.Joshua Slocum sailed around the world in 1898 single handedly repelling cannibals at night by sprinkling tin tacks on his decks,is there any comparison?
Sorry I'm in a bit of a bad mood after British Gases latest attempt to extort money from me for electricity that they hav'nt supplied me with.Still,I hope that my attempt to travel around the Isle of Wight by pogo stick will be equally well supported /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Who pissed in your cornflakes?
Who said any new records have to be "more impressive" than ancient history?
Can't you just congratulate the girls for a fantastic achievement, any record on a very tough and very competitive course is impressive in its own right.
I agree with Flaming and his comments regarding those who have posted inappropriate comments/thread drift. Why not just recognise a job well done rather than try lame attempts at "humour" or commenting on topics that are completely irrelevant

It all seems a bit superficial to me on a serious note & I think this commercialization of sailing has cheapened it.
I know this won't enamor me to the younger generation but hell I go sailing to get away from most of them! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That is an interesting point. My view on the big sponsored boats is that very few people could afford to fund an Open 60 or Volvo 70 campaign by themselves, and even fewer that could would be mad enough to!
And without big, well funded, racing boats the development of sailing technology would be a whole lot slower.

No doubt true, but I must be some kind of Luddite 'cos I don't feel the benefit. I try to keep my sailing simple and, as yet, haven't succumbed to carbon/kevlar sails, ball bearing blocks, carbon masts, swinging keels, water ballast, constantly running power plant to supply my electrical needs, satellite communication, weather routing software and ....
Well done to the girls but Ellen Mac's version in her Corribee may not have been so fast but is still worthy of respect.

Not that I wholly disagree, but you are benefitting from some of the development of yesterdays sailing technology, also probably funded through that same development.
You have a GRP boat, an aluminium mast, dacron sails, some electronic instrumentation of sorts?,
a VHF possibly?
What about lovely braided sheets and halyards?
What about breathable oilies?
See, you probably have benefitted.
Keep it up all you big boats, you make it possible for higher performance at lower cost.

You'd never catch me saying Ellen's voyage unworthy of respect!
Your examples of raceboat technology are of course the current state of the art, and some of them will probably end up in cruising boats in years to come.
Previous examples of technology filtering down of course include;
Self tailing winches, headsail roller furling, ball bearing blocks, saildrive engines, fin keels, spade rudders, fractional rigs, lazyjacks, fully batterned mainsails.....
Presumably the *REAL* holder of fastest time for "Round Britain and Ireland" has more than one keel

Not to take anything from the ladies acheivement. Just find sailing a bit peculiar when the "racing" types focus so much on the third fastest category of sailing boats.

I kind of agree when it comes down to the record setting stuff.
But for general racing there is no doubt that racing is closer and more intense in monohulls.
[/ QUOTE ]
As I said I don't race. Obviously the record setting is matter of fact. But why are the monos close/more intense ?
Is if just fleet sizes ? There aren't (relatively) that many mulit's about.
Just curious and genuinely interested. As I have said before I do accept you loose some of the "feel" of speed - mainly (I think) 'cos the gunnels aren't under water upwind.
Perhaps also why some mono's don't reef sometimes even when they would go faster but it doesn't feel like it.
