Autopilot failed last year and have been putting off replacement and trying to source 'obsolete' parts. (Autohelm - Raymarine ST7000) - but even if I could get the bits there is no guarantee on them if the failure should recur. Now I've decided to 'bite the bullet' and replace the whole unit. BUT - is it really necessary to fork out 2500 of the hard earned for a complete ST7000+ system, or are there other units available which would do the job on a 40 ft sports cruiser?, for less dosh. I'm not bothered about this or that 'interface' - all I want is something to steer the boat while I drink- I mean navigate! Will the ST4000 wheelpilot do the biz? Any other manufacturers out there?

Trev - I had the Raymarine Sportpilot Plus (mounted on the wheel) on a Sealine S37, and to be honest it was not up the the job (though Raymarine reckon up to 36' is OK). You really should go for the inboard (ST5000?), probably more money, but much better IMO

Cheers

Hi
Could I ask what the problems were with the sport-pilot and why you think the ST5000 is better. I was thinking of putting a sport-pilot on my 34' sport cruiser.
