The issue with the Raz isn't anxiety but the 4knts of tide running through it. It can be worked around but why have this obstacle when alternatives are simpler?
Surely it is all a question of timing. Heading for Loctudy, Ste Marine, Lorient etc it is a must. I can honestly say that it has never been a problem but we take good care with times.

In Camaret. Someone recommended Audierne as a good place to wait for a Biscay window, but I understand it is only accessible HW +/- 2?

What is Loctudy like?

Shelter is good regardless of wind direction.

If you plan to stay a few days, point this out to the HM when you arrive.
A berth on the outside of the visitor pontoon can be lumpy (wake of motor and fishing boats).

Local bar 'la mer a boire' very good.

Carrefour supermarket about a mile away.
Chandlery and boatyards on site.
Fuel pontoon.

Le port de plaisance - Loctudy

If you have a tender, a visit to Ile Tudy (opposite bank) is well worthwhile.

I live in the area - should you need more local/practical advise, feel free to drop me a line.

Re Audierne. We draw 2m. We enter HW +/- 3 preferably on a rising tide. If falling would prefer +/- 2.5. Easy now that it is all buoyed. You do not have to use stern transits when you cross the river. Loctudy can have a strong tide through the marina. What is your length? Larger boats moor alongside the wave breaker. Manoeuvring in between pontoons can be difficult if >40 ft. HM should be there until 2000. In extremis, moor outside wave breaker. We were there a week or so ago. The HM was directing boats to private places. Pontoon A, first after the wave breaker is mainly for visitors.

for Audierne, if worried about depth in the channel, you can pick up a buoy in Ste Evette and use next tide.

Probably still a bit strong for us as I think our crew will have to go home by then.

Does Audierne have decent showers and a laundry?

- W

There is a bit of a trek to the decent facilities the ones that are close are grim and you have the market to contend with I seriously doubt there is wifi as well but it's quite a few years since I was there.
Frank or Sybarite will know better but to be honest Nick if I were moving South from Cameret I would go to any of the ports around the Penmarch peninsular Loctudy probably being the better and certainly a better bet than Audierne.

Have a good trip.

Seconded.

I live in the area, and I don't get this Audierne 'fixation'.
It's a nice place to stay if you're just cruising Breton waters, but as a starting point for a Biscay crossing there are better options available in the Penmarc'h - Loctudy area.

It's going to blow a hoolie next week, Audierne looks sheltered but Loctudy looks a bit exposed - though I only have the Almanac.

Wherever we end up on Tues needs to be comfortable for a few days. More info much appreciated, cost is also an issue.

You will be safe and comfortable in any of the larger ports/ marinas cost is going to be about the same.

Doesn't look to bad for a late Friday depart until Tuesday at least.
Possibly, yes. However, the models have been more than usually unreliable recently. There has not been a great deal of consistency. the next few days carefully, if they are saying the same by Thursday, then it would be a go situation.
We have been in the area since late July, now, Port la Foret presently, and decision making has not been easy. We are intending returning to Audierne tomorrow. Watching the models, forecast directions have varied from nearly due S to nearly due W and speeds from 8 to 18 kts. In other words pleasantly sailable to an unwanted beat into F 5/6.
Remember that models tend to underestimate stronger winds. Also that they can only resolve structures on a scale of about 5 grid lengths.

So, Frank, how do you rate the facilities in Audierne? You obviously have a lot of time for the place.

- W
It is our preferred choice if weather-bound. They all have pluses and minuses. We just find it interesting and comfortable with easy provisioning. A minus is that berths are almost invariably on one of 7 hammerheads. Room for two 34 footers (our size) on each. You may get rafted out. Call them on Ch 9 going upriver and they will usually try to meet you. The HM and his lady assistant have reasonably good English. If you come, look for Anhinga, HR34.

Also consider Concarneau. If weather-bound, there are lots of good bars/restaurants, and a Carrefour. The marina also have bikes available.

Winds next week will be mostly SSW to W.
Loctudy very sheltered in those winds.

Looks like the cloud that dumped on us just as we approached the ecluse at Pontrieux yesterday. 25k wind gusts, hail, thunder, lightning, absolutely soaked!
