Intent?
I don't think anyone has used the word intent apart from you.
FG objects to the use of the word attack because he is unable to separate it from the assumption of intent. Attack is a perfectly suitable word to use as the orca have caused damage. Whether with intent or not is immaterial and that is the crux of this thread.

OED definition of “attack”, .....Act against (someone or something) aggressively in an attempt to injure or kill.

I don’t see it in those terms and I’ll bet few scientists do either. The proven science bit is a red herring because the data is simply nowhere near sufficient.

Indeed, further to my previous post has anyone given them the personal flare treatment? I guess they have but don't like to say.

.

Maybe they did,
Maybe the whale got really pissed off,
Maybe the evidence is in Davy Jones' Locker?

Perhaps we should be asking whether a killer whale is capable of having mens rea to attack ? In the same way that sperm whales attack and eat squid and even great white shark ?

Doesn't really matter whether it's an attack or not, if this continues then boats sailing in that area will need something to discourage them without hurting them.
Yes please. Planning to head that way with the family next year.

What's interesting to me: is this a statistically significant risk? Do we see it continue/escalate/stop? Can we attribute it to specific pods, and is that useful (is it possible to track them? Is there any yacht behaviour that encourages/discourages the animal behaviour?

What's not interesting to me: arguing about whether it's an attack or play, deliberate or accidental, emotional or considered, except to the extent it helps us with the paragraph above. Also not of interest: ad hominem attacks on forumites.

i doubt that anyone would stoop to such an abhorrant action let alone admit / boast about it
I would without hesitation if I thought my steering was in danger of being disabled.

It’s no different to defending yourself or your car against a herd of cows.

So what annoys Orcas so much that they go somewhere else?

Sound seems likely the best bet. >

Hearing range

Early studies published in 1972 suggested that the hearing range of killer whales was about 0.5 to 31 kHz. More recent studies show killer whales could hear sounds at frequencies as high as 120 kHz. Greatest sensitivity ranged from 18 to 42 kHz with the least sensitivity to frequencies from 60 to 120 kHz.

WIth a steel boat I've actually had the whole hull resonating before, piezo mic attached to the hull fed into the music system cranked up. The whole boat throbbed away about 75Hz. Maybe a bit low for Orcas, who knows.

Wonder if a bit of plate steel resting against the hull and a cordless hammer drill banging away on that would make things so annoying that they sod off somewhere else.

Don't think many sailors would like to see harm come to such beautiful creatures though if they keep on chewing boat rudders something will have to give.
