Similar GRIB service from here..

Sent a blank email to gmngrib ( at ) globalmarinenet.net and you will receive instructions on what to put in the email to receive specific GRIBs.

Just seen - in the response you get they suggest that if you are on Satellite link then you could use their email software called XGate.. But that is a piece of subscription based software that appears to just compress email.

?????

I think I explained a couple of times that I knew (and Conachair knows) exactly how to set up the reception of a GRIB file for a specified area, with specified time steps and even with variable resolution to save data size...

Still wondering how to receive it via Iridium when out of 'normal' internet range and without paying a third party a subscription for email compression software.

Fast net, I see the need for regular gribs now. Last time I used one I think I just used thunderbird for emails. Get the satphone connected to a satellite and hit send/receive. Then shout "hurry up!!" at the phone :) The compression stuff starts making more sense long term, when faster data transfer starts paying for itself, but you don't have to use it.

Conachair.. Just what I wanted to hear :)

I'll check out Mozilla Thunderbird.. but now I realise it's just a lightweight email client that is needed I can look around for other clients.

It's late so I'll check more in the morning. A quick search came up with something free called Onsatmail.. So if the email account it checks only ever receives GRIB files then by powering on the satellite phone, opening the free client software and downloading just the latest email each time we'll not need a subscription based client.

you may check also "Amosconnect", or "Skyfile" softwares

Should you wish to connect to the internet with the satphone, then press send-receive with the email software, make absolutely sure all your PC automatic updates are switched off, both the usual windows, antivirus, etc updates but also from other software you may have installed

It seems like we don't need any subscription email service then. For the small number of messages we need, we can just use any POP3/IMAP email client such as OutlookExpress, Mozilla Thunderbird or Eudora.

Connecting using Iridium 'Direct Internet Data' rather than 'Dial-up Data' gives a data rate of up to 10 kbps instead of up to 2.4kbps. Sounds simple... I think a test with perhaps a 7k (very small GRIB) could be easy after setting up a gmail account that will ONLY ever receive emails from the automatic GRIB server.

Automatic GRIB file reception even appears to be configurable so that for example you could receive 3hr weather for first 24hrs, 6 hr steps for following 24 hours and 12 hour steps for next 5 days of the GRIB... because 3 days away the forecast will not be so accurate so why download 3hr timesteps!).. One grib with variable steps - I think!

It might be the summer before I can test but will update when tried. Thank you.
