Are Y insurance still the forum choice

Well, their prices are attractive, customer service is good and the policy reads well. That is all, of course, easy enough to achieve - with insurance companies the critical factor is how they handle a non-trivial claim and I don't think we have ever had an account of such a claim processed through Y yet.

I just renewed with them
I don't actually care how they handle a big claim. I expect they will be very decent indeed but I have a written contract and if they were oddly to resist honouring it they'll get a lesson in what's what. The contract is king imho.

I suspect Y are happy about their reputation on here. They deserve it. Their customer care and quality of care&communicatiions is as good as it gets. Their good policy isn't an accident- they have worked to provide decent wording. And their pricing is good, helped by sensibly managed overheads. It's an easy choice imho.
GJW might become a contender if they ever fix their lousy imho policy wording. They have been promising it for ages but nothing concrete has happened. Watch that space. Till then I wouldn't use them for a large/high value boat, for reasons put on here before.

I’ve used them before , they have always had good press on here.
I also worked with a claim and no problem.
If it’s good enough for JFM it’s good enough for me , ha ha .

From memory GJW altered there policy with some areas including a very hot topic on here once about sea cocks and sinking .

I don’t think you will go wrong , might need a survey which you have 2 .

We used them on the last boat any thoughts welcome cheers R

I have just renewed with them and the service and communication is excellent. There was a price increase over last year but a letter from Barrie, the M.D. at Y explained the valid reasons why.

The boat insurance costs less than the car insurance for my two teenage children so I feel it is good value.

Have not made a claim, which is the best test of course, but in all other respects very good. Moved to them just over a year ago and they did not need a survey (18 year old boat) just asked for photographs of boat and of a list of key parts such as engine, gas bottle locker, batteries and seacocks.

What base architecture is the policy from - Zurich by any chance ?

Absolutely no way. Zurich policy is awful imho.

The base architecture is the old HKJ policy, then heavily re written by hkj, amlin and me. They sent it to me in ms Word and let me have a good go at it, around the time I met (at their request) the bosses of Y, pantaenius and HKJ to discuss getting rid of bad clauses on many fronts not just seacocks. I hope you can see that the Y 3P coverage is absolutely best there is in terms of absence of exclusions.

Base architecture is a side show. It's the detail that counts.

Thought so :):encouragement:
Reason I enguired is that in another thread not too far back somebody posted a link to the Y policy and I got my
Martello policy from Coleman’s out and it was almost ( Nov last year Vs ) the same as the Y but with slightly better / greater numbers in terms of payouts - Unfortunately I can,t find an online Vs .

Also has Large Suny biased charter stuff like crew replacement, put you up in hotels ashore in case you can,t use your boat - stuff like that .Largely irrelevant to most on here .
Also free( as in no excess ) - covered haul out for inspection for suspect sterngear damage , no excess - which I thought was a nice feature to have , considering the daily obstacle course of pots here in the Cote d Azur .

How ever it is now Amlin based too says so at the back in the small print .
As said skimming them both together online Y and paper Martello —- identical clause no etc - so they share what seems the “ base architecture “
Granted it’s the detail wording that counts .

I guess Amlin are behind both , and I wonder how many strands are out there or just the one ?

With Barry @ the time I changed boats back end of 2014 it all happened rarther quickly and at that time he wanted an insurance survey due to the age of the boat , with what he was peddling back had then .
Perhaps he,s dropped that deal breaker these days ???

Coleman’s did not require this and were a lot cheaper for what seemed a lot more cover .
Stuff like Med as in medical ins numbers all higher .
There’s a few other bits n pieces like fine art / table ware etc - agian SY related but I have opted out of that .

How much let’s call it “copywrite “ do you know there is on the work you did as described in your post ^^^ ?
Just curious.

LOL, that matches my approach very nicely! :encouragement:

And fwiw, I can only second all the positive experiences reported so far, bar claim handling, which I'm not anxious to test. :)
Btw, even if that's of course the ultimate proof of the pudding with an insurance, personally I rate highly also the handling of anything else (response time, flexibility, etc.).
In fact, the daily handling (so to speak) is something we are all sure to deal with - and the smoother it is, the better.
With claims, my train of thought is that I never had any in the last 30 years, so hopefully never will in the next 30.
Besides, if the worst comes to the worst, I can always resort to begging jfm support here in the asylum... :D

Thanks guys just a question does my insurance cover transport from burton water to Conwy or the transport company

Normally no .
Transport other than lift in out in a yard for usual annual stuff is extra .
You have buy that cover , trucking cover , it’s an add on not levied across the board as 99 % have no need for it.
Your transport Co will direct you I doubt ( happy to corrected ) that insurance is inc in the quote.

The transport company will have its own insurance - ask to see it. However you should also advise your insurer.

Yes for Y and have good reports of very prompt attention and reembursement from a friend for a <10,000£ claim.
I hope they will cover me for the Trans At and beyond.

I am that friend. Although most would perhaps not own up to claims, in this case I think it is worth making an exception. I can only say that Y's handling of my claim was absolutely exemplary. As Nigel says the value of the claim was a bit less than 10k Euro but they only required photos of the damage and a professional estimate from the yard in Porto. The repair was approved within 24 hours and the claim settled within 48 hours of the invoice being submitted. During the work it became evident that extra work was required to ensure that no invisible damage had occurred, Again all that was required was a telephone call and a supplementary estimate. This was also approved within 24 hours. Communication between Y and Amlin is evidently very good.

I would not hesitate to recommend Y and BTW also Douro Yachts in Porto who carried out the repairs and much else besides at a very reasonable cost.
