Are the Tohatsu 3.5 and Merc/Mariner 3.3 the same?

I have read somewhere (probably PBO) that they are the same. Tohatsu have various places of manufacture, bolt on cover and different colour scheme. Reason for 3.5 and 3.3 is that one is measured at flywheel and other at prop.
I believe you can pay about £550 for a 4 hp Mercury with forward and reverse
and even more for battery charging.

Now come on Nick! Buy the best deal - they are the same so just go hunting for the best price. Let's face it mate, you don't want to go round the Needles in a F10 so what difference other than price! All little 2 strokes give trouble sooner or later anyway! Mine hangs in the garage and I use the oars! Yes I said oars! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Boy am I confused.....

OK can I suggest the following -
(1) do you wish to be considered astute or fashion concious - if the latter Black is the only option end.
(2) can I get a full 2 year warante on any unit - this is critical, and problems will occur after the winter lay up so buying now with a 2 year cover will make servicing worthwhile as you are covered when you go to start it after 2 winters. If buying at the begining of the season with 1 year I wouldn't even bother to put it near a dealer!
(3) Happy1 bought the 3.3 Merc.........../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Looked last night and the Tohatsu says Made in Japan whilst the Mariner said made in Belgium.

This adds credence to the view that design is Tohatsu's which is licensed to others, e.g. Mercury/Mariner and Nissan , for manufacture.

So with manufacturing being done in at least three different countries, this is obviously a well proven design. I wonder how long it will before they are made in China?

That all sounds right. AFAIK Tohatsu is a brand/company owned by Nissan. In some countries (moslt of Europe) the Tohatsu brand is used for outboards, in others (USA) Nissan is used. So while the design of this motor seems to be licensed to Mercury, the Nissan/Tohatsu thing is in-house

I do not want to get too pedantic and I doubt whether anyone else has the slightest interest in this, but I also thought that Tohatsu were part of the Nissan group, but looking at the share structure then this is not obvious.

I cannot believe that I have spent my lunch-time looking at this.

tohatsu and nissan

Yes you're right, this is waste of lunch time and we'd better stop this right now :) But yes indeed, it seems from that info that Tohatsu is a quite separate company from Nissan. Thanks for info.

So that's (at least) 2 pieces of incorrect info I have put out just on this one thread. Career re-think time - perhaps I'll apply for a job in the government :)

Still confused of Hythe...

All very informative guys but still can't work out whether to get a gray one or a black one.......might go for a Yamaha or something as it seems a rather less compex choice process...

Anyone know to what industrial group Yamaha belongs to enable me to make the most informed choice???

Thanks

Nick

Told you it was down to a colour choice so don't discount a white one ie Johnson.

Re: Still confused of Hythe...

Yes but what industrial conglomerate are they part of and what are the share prices - I need this information before making a new outboard purchase...?

Re: Still confused of Hythe...

Now look Nick, all info you need is on this thread:

All outboards seem to be secretly designed by Tohatsu and licensed out. In fact, your car engine is probly a Tohatsu. Yeah, you thought the 3 pointed star symbolised German engineering, but no, you've been duped. it'll be tohatsu.

Meanwhile Tohatsu pretend to be part of Nissan group, but it turns out they're an independent mom and pop shop based in Japan's equivalent of Wiltshire

You dont need share prices. They're for the public. This forum contains what you really need, namely insider information.

So you gotta get the best colour and badge. And that means Mercury or Yamaha I'm afraid..... no contest. Also Mercury's start better - Tohatsu is so called because it is "Shout at" rearranged :)

You know very well that Nick's going to dither, until Joanna holds his hand and buys one for him ...

...and a very effective strategy too! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Still fairly confused of Hythe...

Ahhhhhh

I sort of understand and does that mean that your Squadron is really a Tohatsu as well???

Think I might as well shuffle around a few outboard dealers to annoy them before deciding not to buy.....

Might even wait until the 2005 models come out to get the full image thing right as until reading this thread I would never have realised the status attatched to a 3hp outboard motor.

Yours ever ditheringly

Nick
