Just wondering really as I heard conflicting reports from two trustworthy forumites...

Thanks

Nick

Dont tink so. It is the 4, 4.5 and 5hp mercs+mariners that are rebadged Tohatsus. The 3.3hp merc is made in mexico and a different engine altogether, not sourced from Tohatsu AFAIK

Yes, I believe this is the case. One of the guys on the Mariner stand at the SBS also confirmed this to me

I have a complete Tohatsu 3.5 and the bottom end of a Mariner 3.3. Apart from paint colour they are exactly the same. Both of these engines are a couple of years old, so whether things have changed recently I am not sure, although I would be surprised.

Oops sorry I musta got that wrong then Nick! The last merc 3.3 I had was 7 - 8 years ago, now that I think about it (time flies....), so I must be outa date. Jon, would be interested to know, is it badged "made in mexico" still?

OK lets look at these little beauties in a little detail........

For both -
Weight 29lbs
Fuel Tank - 1.4 litre
Stroke/Bore - 47x43
CC - 74.6
Gear ratio - 2.15:1
Transom Height - 15"
Ignition - CDI
Fuel Induction - Loop Charged
Looks

Differences
Tohatsu quoted WOT range 4200 - 5200 and 3.5HP
Merc/Mariner quoted WOT - 4500 - 5500 and 3.3HP

I say that they are fundamentally the same; not sure who's building, designing or paying whom to do what but my money would be on Tohatsu designing and probably building............

However it's all circumstantial evidence I present; I don't have it from any horses mouths

Plot thickens

MPE limited (or NV?)is the Belgian Brunswick company that manufactures many of the mercs, incl the bigger ones. That makes it sound like the 3.3hp is not Tohatsu sourced.......

Do not remember mine saying made in Mexico but I'll look later. In any case AFAIK Tohatsu are the designers with others badging these units. Manufacturing may well take place at a number of different locatons throughout the World. They are simple and transport costs will be relatively high as well as reducing currency risk.

Broken 3.3 for sale

Just out of interest I have a Tohatsu 3.3, probably new in 2001. After about 3 hours use, I took the wheels off the tender because they were stopping me getting a full turn. I thought the bolts went through some deadwood but they went through the double bottom and I sank tender and engine on the Hamble.

Having recovered it and shaken out the water it ran ok, I used it a couple more times and then the big boat was sold and the engine went in the barn. Anyway, now it only runs for a few seconds and dies, engineers pronounce it not worth repairing, corroded carb or something, but most of it is virtually new from the tool kit to the bottom end.

Anyone like to make offer?

OK the deciding factor!

Ahem if it comes down to badge engineering and colour, get the Mercury imho. Mercury make much superior motors to Tohatsu in the larger sizes, and the Merc brand versus Tohatsu brand is like Mercedes versus Nissan. Even though they are the same motor people (not forumites) generally will regard the Merc as a better class of motor
