Has anyone got experience of using the Aqua4Gen towed generator? The info on it looks good and I've been told that it will 'produce about 1A per knot of boat speed'. Im thinking of using it to produce the power for my autopilot on long passages.

You'll get all the alternatives now....but I used the Aquair, very good, excellent service support, loads of power and a very near silent wind gen when hoisted above the boom.
10,000 miles and working like new.

I concur with Tigawave - only experienced the Aquair but it has performed faultlessly now for 8 years. Very quiet in wind mode, and towed mode produces a shade under 1 Amp/Kt at usual cruising speeds.

Hi Pedro,

We've used our Aqua4gen for our Pond trips, and it's a truely fantastic bit of kit, putting between 3 - 7 amps into the batteries 24/7, depending on boat speed, while in the Trades. It can be a bit higher but, together with our solar panels and windgen, we regularly had a surplus of power despite running the 'fridge full time, lights at night, CD player, fans etc etc.

If equipping the boat again for long distance sailing, thiis would be the one I'd go for. One of our other Pond circuit's on friend's boat using an Aquair (combined wind/water gen.) gave very similar results. However, we felt the money paid for the combined unit was too much, considering the hassle in changing it from water to windgen. each time.

In any case, we feel happier having individual units and therefore two sources of power in case one goes down.

Cheers Jerry

Thanks very much for your replies , very interesting and it sounds just the job.I'll get and Aquair or Aqua4Gen depending on the best deal I can do. Anyone got a one that they want to sell?

Do have a look at DuoGen

I've had one since they launched and am very pleased. The mark 2 version looks even better. Much easier to use than the normal towed unit. Quick to recover, quick to change to wind mode and very quiet too.

Re: Do have a look at DuoGen

i fitted a duogen mark 2 a few weeks ago to cross to bayona.powered my nav system, autopilot and allowed me to run my radar[4kw scanner all the way-530 nm] provided plenty of ice. crossed milford haven to corunna 3 days 8 hrs. negligible effect on speed. very easy to deploy.at anchor easilly changed to wind mode and still plenty of ice for the gin and tonic. well worth looking at
