G'day,

Was planning to head down to the Channel Islands from Brighton for a few days last weekend, but the fridge broke. Why does that sort of thing always happen around a Bank Holiday?

But we’re a cruising boat, must keep the tinnies cold! Should all be sorted over the next couple of days, but now the forecast’s looking a tad puffy!

And the chap who was coming with me can’t do next weekend!

So looking for some people who’d like a sail, hoping to head off next Saturday though the winds still looking blowy and from the S-W quadrant and we point like a brick and the seas will still be up – nah, probably Sunday.

Come on Simon, stick another forecast up!

Plan would be a run down to St Peter Port, stop a couple of days (I have a pub quiz I must do on Tuesday night), spend a few days more popping to wherever we fancy around the CI’s, then back to Brighton, being away for a week or so. But if the weather turns bad, staying a few extra days if need be.

Be ideal for anyone looking for a few miles for their quals – be around a 300 nm round trip, a couple of overnighters, running 3on-3off watches. Or anyone just fancying a few days away. One person would be grand, but happy to have up to four.

Based down in Brighton Marina at the moment, Hinewai’s a 45ft Roberts Mauritius ketch which Jean, my wife, and I have sailed from Australia (J’s back in Oz at the moment). She’s a well found blue water boat, chart plotter, AIS, HF/VHF radios and other various electronic thingies that were state of the art a few years ago but still work fine. Liferaft, EPIRBS, pfds, fire extinguishers all checked/serviced 2013 (how does water in a liferaft have a use by date?).

If you want to see a pic, have a look at my thread about finally getting a photograph.

So if you’re interested, PM me with some contact details and we’ll chat.

Peter

Oh, by the way, because we’re Australian registered you’ll need to bring your passports!

And thinking about it, since this post will soon disappear down the page, feel free to just reply "hi but sorry can't help" to bounce it back up - thanks everso!

I can't help in the short term but feel free to PM me for future trips if you need crew. I'll even bring beer to test the fridge :)

Can't figure out why a duff fridge would put a halt on sailing.
Just put the beer in a cooler with a bag of ice and your all set. surly an Aussie would figure it out.
Unfortunetly I'm on the other side of the planet. otherwise thanks for the invite.

+1 - mine's duff at the moment (just ordered a new compressor controller) and I wouldn't dream of curtailing a trip because of it. Bags of ice are about a quid each, and after the Scuttlebutt Poole trip (four days) we still had a fair bit to melt and wash away with hot water as we were emptying the galley.

A grid a couple of inches above the bottom of the box is handy so that things at the bottom aren't immersed in meltwater; our fridge came with a good one in stainless steel. But even that's not essential if you put sealed bottles / beer cans / etc at the bottom.

Thanks for the suggestions re ice - thankfully had two full ice trays, plus I always have a couple of plastic 2ltr milk bottles full of water frozen down in the freezer side when there's no food there, plus a dozen cold tinnies at the bottom of the fridge. That's been keeping everything cool for the last few days.

But I'm a liveaboard a long way from home though and, being in no rush, prefer to have the boat working right. One thing I've learned over the last 6 years is to fix things when you can, don't put them off.

Bet the compressor controller wan't cheap - mine needs a new ASU controller - again! Still, it's nice and easy to fit and knowing what's wrong now, even if it takes a while to come, I can hot-wire the compressor and water pump if need be.

Peter, I can appreciate your point. Just makes me wonder why you would want to sail on a busy bank holiday weekend?
Oh I suppose the sun was shining for once!

Pete, I always keep a couple of 1 pint cartons of milk in my house freezer to use as Ice Blocks for the cool box on the boat if I am planning a week away I will freeze up more.
Kills to birds with one stone, I figure the extra cost in milk is not going to break the bank..
