The one thing that is often seen is ropes running against the end of the fair lead. The clue is in the name fairlead and ropes or warps should exit them as far as possible by arranging the boat so that they do not touch the sides but exit as near as possible out of the centre of the fairlead if you can manage that there will be no friction, no squeaking or other noise.
