Anti Foul

I have anti fouled my sportscrusier and placed on a swinging mooring. She is new to me but had previously been anti fouled.
I now find that weed is sticking to the hull just above the water line. Should I bring the line of anti foul higher? Is it worth taking her out to do this?

No don't take her out, you'll probably still get weed there anyway. Just go round with a scrubbing brush when it looks too messy to put up with.

On a similar subject, I'm just in the process of fitting a brand new very pretty gloss black outdrive leg to my cruiser. Should I Anti Foul this before commissioning? It would seem such a shame, but ..........

use the clear spray one, a bit expensive, but it will maintain the appearance.

I've received so much conflicting advice on the issue of whether or not to antifoul drives that I really don't know if I'm doing the right thing

But, for what it's worth, here's my thoughts for my first year

- When you antifoul the bottom of the boat the slime still builds up and needs a scrub anyway, presumably the drives would be the same
- I keep my boat in a marina and visit regularly so I can clean the upper parts which don't get a blast of water when I'm at speed
- My engineer told me that it was more difficult to service drives that had layers of antifoul on (I like to keep him happy)
- Getting the antifoul properly on to all of the many surfaces of the drive must be next to impossible anyway

So, I decided not to antifoul and that I would make a conscious effort to get in the water every now and then, say when we visit the beach, to clean the drives

The boat was already many years old when I aquired it so the drives already looked in a bit of a sorry state, I would say with new drives if you are able to make a commitment to clean them regularly then don't antifoul

it will always have some crud (if you are in a stinky marina) or some weed growth, and early season is the best time for the stuff to grow. You don't need to take it out. The job is called "doing the waterline" and you need a brush, and/or perhaps various interesting chemicals like patio cleaner. Or just a brush. There's no harm in (next time) bringing the afoul up a bit, as you are rocking on it a bit hence growing weed further up.
