Anti foul Problem

Hi all
I bought my first boat last July and since October it’s been on the hard. The previous owner anti fouled it using Hempel Classic for me prior to purchase but it’s not behaving as I thought. If I run my finger down the hull gently dust is left on my finger. It is abrading anti foul but i would not have expected it to come away so easily. Also under the bow, on the ground there are lots of splash marks where water has run off the hull and landed on the ground taking the anti foul with it. The bow points into the prevailing wind.

so my questions are

is this normal? I don’t see other boats losing anti foul like this

What is the best way to prep the surface before applying new anti foul? Most of the hull has a decent coating left and only the high wear areas are looking a bit thin.

thank you for your advice

Wash it, remove any flaky bits and recoat with antifoul of your choice. Most antifouls will go on top of what you have but check the data sheet. If in doubt apply a barrier primer coat such as Primocom or Vyniguard.

If the boat has not been in water since new A/F I would suggest ignore concerns and relaunch in spring. You could do well to spray water on it occasionaly but the dust I think will be normal as designed to abrade in water. The stains where water has been on it are not surprising. Don't worry.
Of course most a/f is designed to be painted on just before launch but I think it worth the risk to relaunch when ready. The a/f paint data might help here. ol'will

I did almost 1000 miles between Eastbourne where I bought the boat and Largs. So the high wear areas have lost all their anti foul and so it needs re done. Relaunch is booked for 1
March. I have read about a wipe down with acetone but that sounds like a lot of acetone.

The dust is normal. If the surface is good, just re coat with eroding a/f of your choice. If it’s thickly coated, flaking and pitted, brace yourself for the most unpleasant job in sailing.

By the sounds of it you're in a pretty good position, i.e. you don't have layer upon layer of old AF on there. I'd ask around see what others are using where you are & base your choice of what to use on that. Or if it's your forever boat (whatever that means!) you could consider Coppercoat?

You live in Scotland. Your antifoul transfers to your finger when rubbed, because your hull has been almost permanently wet since you lifted out, as mine has , here in Ireland. ?

that will be true!

i need a few days of no rain and decent wind to dry it off a bit. Warm temperatures are asking a bit much!

I would say so. Re hull is very smooth. I think I will rub the keel right back because there are bits where there is no anti foul
