Can anyone help?

We have the above winch and it has started to make not nice noises. So thought we would service it. BUT we cannot get into it. We have the blow up diagrams. The boat is 11 years old so we suspect that the winch is also that age. Black adonised.

Any simple diagramatic instructions would be very very useful. Just found out from the old bills they are?were fitted in 1999.

The link below does cover the 30.2 self tailing winch and as mentioned it looks like there is that big circular clip at the top that needs removing. Put something down through it (into the top of the winch) before you remove the clip so that when it does come off it can't fly away. And be careful if you're using a small thin screwdriver to prise it off.

Note - paper towels sound like a good idea to put springs and pawls on as you clean them.. Word of warning - one puff of wind and they'll blow away! (Not such a good idea)

Webcraft.. I have inside, outside, straight and bent circlip pliers... but they all rely on small holes in the ends of the circlip to work so would not work on these circlips on the top of a winch.

Out of interest - what type of circlip pliers do work on these circlips that are on the tops of winches..? They tend to be of a spiral design that overlap by a turn rather than the common 'C' shape with a small hole at each end.

A big thank you to all the replies. As usual all very helpful and just what I wanted. Now for the very first time I shall with trepidation attempt to service the winch'es.

I am a bit concerned about removing and re-assembling the circlip, thanks for all the tips

A good strong penknife works on the spring, or a tiny screwdriver. Just be careful to pry the tail of the spring upwards, not outwards, or you'll bend the thing and it'll be useless. When you refit the spring you start by stretching it slightly like a slinky-spring and then press the rest back into place as you work round the winch.

Agreed. My SWMBO does this every year. Get a washing up bowl and cut a winch size hole in the bottom. Place over winch before start, and you may not lose the bits as you dismantle it.
