Just acquired another engine this time attached to a boat, Yamaha 80 2 stroke

Question is I want to connect another battery to run stereo system, GPS etc do I connect it in parallel or series and what diodes do I need in between as I don?t want to run down starter battery.

Easiest way to connect 2 batteries is with a battery switch, Normally 4 position. Batt1 Batt2 both and off. Dont connect the batteries in series as this will give you 24 volts into a 12 volt system. Goes well for about 2 seconds then just goes up in smoke. Or you can buy a blocking diode from most engine dealers, altho i dont like em a lot, had so many probs with them

As BarryH says best solution for a simple two battery rig is to use a 1-both-2 switch in the charging side so that either or both batteries can be charged. DONT use a blocking diode-they suck almost a volt of charge which should get into the batteries. Use battery 1 for starter only and battery 2 for domestics. In emergency you could use a croc lead between positives (assuming common negative circuit) to get you started from domestic battery. Pay attention to your alternator may need beefing up.
