It looks as if one major difference with the earlier incident is they lost their keel. This boat seems to have survived intact.
The Santander one turned or was already facing into the breaking wave. The first one was broadsided by the breaker with no course change apparent. Possibly the Santander one had recognised the risk, perhaps underestimating it.

Certainly an image I will carry with me when planning shallow water approaches in big swell.

Small world! They have just pulled in next to me here in Parc do Nachos marina in Lisbon. A lovely Brazilian couple who bought their boat in Sweden. The rudder broke, they lost their sprayhood and some wooden thing from the front of the boat. They needed to replace the alternator, starter motor and hatch boards and had to be towed in. She was below and a bit hurt, he was above and just lost his glasses. He doesn't speak English, I wonder if that had something to do with them not being fully aware of their situation.

One reason the design of fishing vessels from that area have pronounced flair

Flares might well come in handy! :D

The rudder broke . . .

I was thinking as I watched them being rocketed backwards and sideways I doubt the rudder would have survived, though they then did appear to have steering control towards the end of the clip.

A complication of Santander is that the visitors marina is way past town up the river. There is no way of seeing way of seeing what goes on until you are in the open.

Boat copped extremely well. Im not quite so sure if the skipper did. We all make blunders and i am no exception. It all comes down to experience, and by that I mean, until you make that bad call and experience the consequences of it first hand, you dont learn. However id say given the outcome, The decision of the skipper to leave that day by that route was poor. The video will serve me well in the future.
I had a slightly similar experience fortunately with the wind and rollers on my stearn however against the tide. Seeking refuge from a storm I should not have gone out in( was so much fun) and decided to Enter the Cuan Sound. The general sea state was not too bad, but as it shallowed and approached the sound the rollers really built until it became almost impossible to maintain a course. Good fun but a lesson learnt. Of course Id do that again as it was absolutely nothing like the conditions in the clip and was part of a really challenging few days sailing, but a lesson learnt.

That’s not exactly true but as a general concept , it does stand up to scrutiny. You don’t have to experience an incident and its consequences to learn.

The question is why do some people not learn and improve their knowledge and competence. A lot of psychologists and consultants have been making good money convincing organisations and the associated people how to learn.

This thread is a good example of how knowledge is transferred and information learned effectively. A bad thing happens, gets analysed, discussed and ingrained by enthusiasts deeply interested in the subject. Framing lessons in a formal structure and consuming hours of review and process has its place, but for many at the coal face who will instigate an incident ,utterly irrelevant and inefficient.
