Andiamo - Let's Go!

It's not a Sealine(:p), but a very smart and "together" looking boat nevertheless.
Major Congratulations on the purchase, and ... Thank Goodness you have finally bought something!

Lovely looking boat, congrats.

Bit confused about your comments re kad300 and kad44. I thought they were basically the same except HP. I know the 42 and 43 are simpler than the 300, but is the 44?

congrats Pete!

you really disappointed me, I was almost certain you'd never buy a boat :p
These boat buying threads of yours were almost as long as my rebuilt thread!

Nice looking boat and I have to admit you've been talking about the Targa for so long, and only last month one turned up in Volos port and had a chance of having a good look at it, really nice boat indeed. Hope you have great time both in the UK and the Med. Not too sure you can avoid a passerelle though...

cheers

V.

Congratulations. A great looking boat.

To connect the Autopilot to the plotter is very easy. I did this on our old boat. You just need the seatalk to seatalk ng converter. Plug everything together and off you go. With such a low load of data to pass you shouldn't need to apply power to the converter. I didn't when I did mine and it worked fine. I connected a ST6002 setup to an e9 plotter.

Nice boat.

Why do people think you need a passarelle on a boat like that? We have a windy 37 in the family based in majorca with no passarelle, and its fine to get on and off, you just pull it in slightly with the stern ropes and jump on.

I can see the need for a passarelle on much larger/heavier boats that you cant pull in by hand, but it should be no problem on a t34.

not familiar with spanish marinas, but sometimes the quai is way too high for you to do so (or climb out) otherwise sure it's fine pulling the ropes a bit ;)

Thanks for answering and it makes sense if the quay is really high. Not encountered any high quays in mallorca, but havent been any further afield than that,so maybe there are more high quays than i thought out there

As said, some quais are too high for this - Port Vauban is marginal, for example, and San Remo is too high. It also depends how loose you like to leave your mooring lines - I don't leave any slack in mine so you couldn't pull my boat back to the quai even if you wanted to. I started off in the SoF without a passerelle and it very quickly became a total pita. It all completely depends on what the quais are like in your habitual ports I guess.

Hi Pete,

Hope all goes well with your new boat - I loved my T34, I'm sure you will have a load of fun with her...

I found one shot of the lounge where we had a small TV fitted, you may just be able to see the bracket...

We spent the afternoon on the boat yesterday (in the pouring rain). Some updates...

Easter Eggs

As anyone who has bought a used boat will know, there's always the possibility of a few 'Easter Eggs'. So yesterdays finds were...

1) A very serviceable set of matching overcarpets. I've removed these from the boat and will get them professionally cleaned this week. We'll use some steam and carpet cleaner to freshen up the boats main carpets.

2) An expired Part 1 Registration certificate. This may make it easier for us to register the boat on the Part 1 register should we wish to do so. The boat is actually called "Andiamo of Littlehampton".

3) First Aid kit still in shrinkwrap.

4) The boat wasn't hooked up to shore power so we were surprised when the 240v TV came on! Further digging through the boat's paperwork revealed that an inverter has been fitted at some point. I'll do some digging around to see if I can find it.

5) A couple of Nav cards. One was alread in the old plotter. The other (W Europe) was in a box of records and I guess might be OK for the Med. They're quite old, can they be updated?

6) A locker full of the PO's clothes. Waiting for the PO to confirm if he wants them back otherwise they'll be heading for the charity shop.

Other observations

On closer inspection, the Leather sofa is actually less grubby than I had previously thought so I'll but some PH neutral leather cleaner and give it a wipe over. The Alcantara is a little grubby but I'll see if some upholstery cleaner will freshen it up.

The boat's currently ashore for the legs to be serviced and I hope we'll get it back in the drink for the weekend.

P, 1st of all, massive congratulations.
I used to think that I deserved to find a decent boat after my endless search, but if this is true for myself, it's an order of magnitude truer for you! :encouragement:

Ref this:

I can give you my recent first hand experience, since I've got the same Raymarine stuff of your "old" setup, which takes the C-Map NT+ cards.
My boat came with 2 cards, both of the Adriatic. Besides, I found on eBay an RL80 screen which I bought to replace the 70 which was originally installed as a second monitor, and it came with another card.
Bottom line, I went with these 3 cards to a C-Map dealer, and not only I got them all upgraded to the latest charts, but I also changed the coverage (from 2 of the Adriatic and one of the Ligurian sea, I now have one covering the whole Adriatic, plus one for the Thyrrenian and one for Sicily).
All of them were upgraded at half the price of new cards (can't remember the numbers by heart, but can check it out if you wish).
The only limit to consider is that these cards used to have a different capacity depending on the original coverage, so you might be unable to upgrade one card and change its coverage if the new area you are interested in doesn't fit in the old card.
But I'm afraid I'm not aware of a way to check that on the plotter (if any), and I only realized this hardware limit when I was at the dealer, which checked the cards with his C-Map reader.

As an aside, I also have the same a/p as yours, and while I understand your wish to interface it with the newer plotter in principle, I suspect that this will not improve the a/p functionality one bit. In fact, I dislike it with passion, to be honest.
I mean, the boat is straight as an arrow when on a/p, so essentially it does its job.
But the 10 years older Furuno I was used to in my old tub was quite simply in a different league, in terms of tweaking possibilities... :(

Congrats on the new boat. Was wondering if you'd ever buy one. :)

May as well open the first aid kit. Most of it will probably be out of date.

The Med nav card doesn't look that old. Is there a date on it? Worth logging on to the Navionics site and plugging it in?
You can buy an update card for about £100 if yours won't just download a newer map.

Hi P, thanks for the kind words. I probably only looked at a fraction of the boats that you did so you still win on the effort front. I came close to buying a few, I think one or two were "ones that got away" and another was a "bullet dodged", but you never know.

I believe the old plotter is a RL70C. Is the RL80 the same footprint but a later model? What's the advantage over the RL70 (bigger screen)?

Regarding the A/P, being a lazy sod I want the boat to steer to way points and not just a course. So I'd rather me messing about with way points on the newer plotter (closer to eye level and with the bigger screen). However looking at the invoice for when the E7 was fitted it says "wire into 'Seatalk'" so perhaps the E7, the RL70C and the Autopilot are already connected. More of a concern is that the VHF doesn't seem to be getting any GPS signals. It's a Garmin VHF300. Could that be connected via Seatalk (one of the invoices says "check NMEA connection for DSC")?
