If you are single handed and have a helm toggle switch - its the way to go. I appreciate powering down seems daft, with gravity available, but if you are at the helm it takes time to walk to the bow at which point you can have been blown to a less favourable location. Powering down and counting the seconds just works - but you do need to know your windlass speed - which is easy to calibrate. in order to check specification speed against actual - you need to have marks on the chain. Knowing retrieval speeds and how much you deployed is really useful when you are at the helm. Also, for windlasses that power down, if you can count there is actually no real need to mark chain (feet per second). My chain in marked, but often I just count, specifically in the dark. Easier.
