Anchor chain marker colour combinations.

Traffic light system worked for me, cable tie every 5m, green, yellow, red and repeat.

That's not good enough .... you forgot to tell us :

1. What Galvanised you used
2. Temperature of air around you at the time
3. Temperature of water intended to anchor in
4. What plastic was used to make the ties
5. Were you standing on your head ... sitting down ... or laying on back when you applied the ties
6. Did you consult the Anchor Chain Gods before doing the job

????

Tut Tut .... simple answers are just not good enough here.

Im sure I read the idea of using a cable tie at 5m 2 at 10m 3 at 15m etc etc on this thread ages ago, so when I got 30mof new chain for my wee boat I went with that system, and have to say, its simple and brilliant. Works for me, very well.
The big boat has 90m of chain so I’ll modify it for that but basically use the same idea.

My chain has cable ties every 5 meters. Seeing that I can and do anchor in shallow water, I end up with only about 12 meters of chain out for a 3 to 1 ratio. Does help that the tidal range isn't to big for my local area ! I do have 60m of chain though plus another 50 meters of rope available if required for deeper waters.

Why did jay0411 or who ever resurrect this thread and hasn't been logged in since ?

Also, for windlasses that power down, if you can count there is actually no real need to mark chain (feet per second). My chain in marked, but often I just count, specifically in the dark. Easier.
If you are single handed and have a helm toggle switch - its the way to go. I appreciate powering down seems daft, with gravity available, but if you are at the helm it takes time to walk to the bow at which point you can have been blown to a less favourable location. Powering down and counting the seconds just works - but you do need to know your windlass speed - which is easy to calibrate. in order to check specification speed against actual - you need to have marks on the chain. Knowing retrieval speeds and how much you deployed is really useful when you are at the helm.
