Thinking of spending next winter in Amsterdam. Anyone able to recommend good mooring/marina for 36ft shoal draft boat - Need to accept liveaboard/access electricity/reasonably near city centre.
Wouldn't recommend Amsterdam! Not Holland at all. Full of junkies, beggars, unsavoury English people with piercings and tattoos, and of course other unmentionable chaps. Unless you have to be in Amsterdam I would recommend that you find a mooring outside, e.g. Zaandam, Aalsmeer, Muiden etc. Good public transport exists into the city. Call me prejudiced but I love Holland and avoid Amsterdam like the plague.
There is a small marina right opposite Central Station, across the Noordzee canal. It is secure, and quiet off-season. I have berthed there several times and left the boat there once for a week. Many British owners seem to leave boats there for some time, as it is 5 minutes walk to the ferry and 15 minutes from there to the airport.
The marina (small) opposite Central Station is called the Sixhaven. Its near a supermarket and the security is adequate. Brilliant free ferry service across to Central Station. Not a lat of room but they will probably squeeze you in. There are some houseboats permanently moored in there.
I totally agree with what Vyv wrote. The marina is called Sixhaven. There's always a lot of foreign boats around, and the liveaboard thing shouldn't be a problem, as long as you can state that the time you stay is limited. It is not unusual in Holland to agree a mooring fee for the complete winter season, which normally means that you have to leave by the 15th of april. (in some marinas it is march) when the local box moorings are taken up again by boats that come out of their winter storage.
I don't really agree with what the Bargee wrote. Of course there's junks etc. in Amsterdam, but certainly not more than in other big cities. And the Sixhaven is across the IJ which means that stealing scum have to take the ferry deliberately to go and steal at the marina. Not very likely. BTW, the (24 h service) ferry is free and goes at 10 minutes interval during day time and at 30 minutes intervals during the night. It brings you to the back of the central station which is virtually in the heart of Amsterdam. So no need for your own transport.
If you wish to be a little bit more outside, there is a lovely little marina at Durgerdam, with regular bus services to the city. But you are further away from Amsterdam and no public transport all through the night.
Hi there, the marina Vyv mentioned is the Sixhaven, Its situated in Amsterdam north of the IJ (the harbour basin of Amsterdam) close to the ferry to the centre and railway station. From there direct train to Schiphol airport.
The Sixhaven was this year elected "visitors marina of the year".
You can phone them on *31-20-6370892 for further info. Dont know if they permit liveaboard or if they have accomodation next winter.
Pay no attention to the Bargee's comments. Nutcases, crankpots, junks and the like are found in every big city and give it its flavour.
BTW. red light district 5 mins from ferry.
Steffen! Dont blame me. You MUST learn to type quicker. Would have saved me a lot of writing. BTW, I wonder what brought the red light district to your mind. Wouldn't dream of directing an innocent foreigner to such tempting places. Perish the thought! So next time, mind your words!
Peter,
My experience as a born Amsterdammer is that practically every foreigner asks for directions the red light district but then again, that maybe my warped mind.
We stayed in a small yard near to the Oranjsluice....absolutley great...water ferry to central station and charming surrondings...very back water but just what the doctor ordered....
If it's the one which has two large red and green dolphns at the entrance, I did not know they took any visitors. Would be a good spot too.... Is it in an area with a lot of modern architecture?
