Welcome to the forum but I cannot recall any previous threads involving chartering of any sort on mainland Italy.

It will be interesting to see if there are any charter businesses.

Thanks Buck - was your chartering with Bareboat Sailing? I have seen their website but seeking advice on whether reputable and good to deal with?

Ive used them twice and booked again with them for next year. No complaints at all. But I've used them for Croatia and Greece rather than Italy.

I havn't chartered in mainland Italy but we did have a week from Palermo to the Aeolian Islands. The highlight was sailing around Stomboli at night time. We were with Sunsail but I think they have pulled out of the area. Beware, it is a very expensive place for marina berthing. About £100 per night for no facilities in most places during the summer for a 40 footer. Another boat described their charter as a week spent bleeding euros.

In Palermo nearly all the yachts from all the companies were equiped with Danforth anchors and about 50% of them had bent flukes. I failed to notice that before we set off and it was just about impossible to get the anchor to set.

Welcome to the forum.

A stunningly beautiful place, so I am sure that it will be a great trip.
I can't help you with charter companies but, just as PeterR said, I spoke with some liveaboard cruisers at Napoli marina who said that they found the moorings, on that but of the coast, horrendously expensive. They mentioned one place ?Capri?, ?Ischia?, in particular. It was a couple of years ago but I recollect that they said that a mooring buoy in Positano was £50 a night.

Unless money is no object, my tip would be to charter from a central location where you can use the boats's 'home' marina for free and use it as a base to head out to anchorages, knowing that you have affordable shelter if you need it. If a charter company has any discount agreements with marinas in the areas, that could be a factor worth considering.
There is plenty to see ashore, too.
Have a great holiday.

Thanks gents - we're looking into Bareboat and Sunsail in full knowledge of the mooring fees. Not keen on Sunsail requiring £250 for fuel when we're hoping to predominantly be under sail!

Stunningly beautiful - but stunningly expensive too. I forget the exact numbers but when staying there last year I enquired about the cost of a berth for the night in Amalfi harbour. Breathtaking.

We turned up in Amalfi in July 2007 and we're able to moor stern to the ferry quay from 8pm to 8am with no charge. Things might have changed 7 years later, but worth checking.

Then we sailed down to Stromboli where we anchored for 5 nights off the town in the East of the island.

Happy days :)

The trip is going to be the second week of my honeymoon so don't mind pushing the boat out for want of a better expression - I'm guessing the mooring fees will be in the region of £100 per night?

You can check the prices, and even book, using portbooker.
Out of curiousity, I had a look at the top end Capri marina http://www.portbooker.com/en/moorings/italy/campania/napoli/capri-marina-grande
186.30€ per night for a 12m boat.

I hope the in laws are paying for the honeymoon! ;-)

As others have said, a very lovely part of the world. Heikell's book on Italy give you a number of anchorages in the area, although not much on the Amalfi Coast itself. We found that if we arrived at an anchorage at say 1700 or so, it would be packed, lots of folks swimming, messing about round their boats. However, as the sun starts to set, the anchorage will suddenly empty: like from about 70+ boats to you and three others for the night in the space of half an hour. Once we realised this, we used to just drop the hook on the outside of the crowd and chill, then up the hook and move into the shelter of the anchorage proper. Fun watching the place fill up the following morning.
Echo what has been said about costs though. €75 a night in Salerno for a 12m boat with nothing other than electricity and water.

2007. A bit out of date, but might be of interest. Several bays and some very expensive marinas in Procida (85€ per night 10.75 metres) and Ischia.

In Amalfi several ormegiatori operate their own pontoons. It's worth trying to book in advance. We were lucky to get space on Aniello's quay. He was very helpful squeezing us in and also found us a place with another operator when we had to move the next day. He's Aniello Esposito phone no. in Heikell. Amalfi is well worth the visit. You can take the bus up to Ravello, visit the town and then hike down. Superb!

Many bays in the area were closed off as protected marine reserves. You definitely need up to date information, as the CG were enforcing this strictly and we had very few options of where to spend the night. We found a bay east of Camerota 39.59.9N 015.25.55E which was full of motorboats. As suggested in another post we waited for them to leave, and then re anchored for the night.

Hi
A word of warning re booking with portbroker, we found their prices to be very inflated. While in a port having paid the displayed rate - then looking up portbroker online to find their price was sometimes nearly double.

We chartered in the Gulf of Naples/Amalfi Coast this October. The no. 1 charter base is located in Procida island, which is not that well known compared to Capri or Ischia. However, we found the island's main village lovely and perhaps the most original during the whole week.

The charter company that we used was called Sailitalia, but the boat was from Sunsail so I guess that they are connected. There is a fueling station in Procida, so you can fill the tank before returning the boat and thus, there is no need to pay 250 € extra for the fuel.

We skipped Capri as the Marina Grande is so expensive and the island itself is a big tourist trap. However, there is a beautiful anchorage called Marina Piccola on the southern side of the island, but during our stay the anchorage had too much swell, so we couldn't use that.

If you are interested, you will find more information, photos and see one possible route (100 nm) for one-week cruise from my blog: http://www.sydolphindance.com/
