Alternative to electric winch

I've seen one of the right-angle drills in operation. Because the mass of the drill is well offset from the bit, the gearbox lasted about a day. But that was in an agr workshop.

Are you set on power-assisted winching, or would a longer winch handle ease the pressure on the old deltoids ?

It was'nt so much the strength required, but more the seemingly several thousand turns of the winch ;-)

What size winches do you have ? A dedicated small halyard one, or can you lead the halyard back to a main genoa winch with more appropriate ratios for your (undoubted :) ) power ?
 
Is the problem the weight of the sail, or friction? The latter can usually be fixed, and seems a better idea than just pulling harder.

Look at a racing boat system where you can pull the halyard vertically down outside the mast.

The problem is with the weight of the wee bugger on the end of the winch handle ... or lack of it .. if it wasn't for the ratchet action wee Jimi would be flying around the winch as the main came tumbling down ... ;)
 
the issue was the 2 friggin reefs that were in the main when it was last up! With the single line reefing and the 3rd reef rigged there's one heck of a lot of friction!!

If I know I will be sailing with fewer reefs than were in the sail the last time it was up, then I pull the reefing lines that I won't be needing back through the turning blocks before leaving the berth. Ok, a bit of a faff, but that way you don't have the added friction when you do hoist.

When leaving the boat, I always undo any reefs before stowing the sail and putting the cover on, and that includes pulling the pendants through. Otherwise I am certain to forget when I next go out, and make a mess trying to haul a reefed sail all the way up the mast. I think it's probably better for the sail too.

OTOH if its BAB then you need to frig about pitting yin in! I think Angele's WOW is mair effishent!
 
Jimi it is hard work on a fractional rig if you winch the main up.

I always sweat the main up standing at the mast. and SWMBO just pull the halyard slack through at the winch... then i come and winch the last bit up.

We do the same when flying a Kite !

The issues are... reefing line size and friction round the blocks in the mast / boom.

do you still have a wire / rope halyard ? we changed ours to a smaller dia dynema halyard, which improved it

If your shaking a reef out pull the reefing lines out at the back of the boom first and at the front on the mast.

you could always splash out on a rutchenson ballraced mast track and cars for the sail :)

edit... our third reef is not attached to the sail... one rope ends in a knot at the boom end the other is hanked to a cleat at the mast.

Yep, I've got the Wire/ rope halyard. Probably a good idea not to rope the third reef unless the weather forecast warrants it!
