Does anyone know of a cheap marina for a 36ft yacht to overwinter near ALicante or Altea? Tried Altea but much too expensive.

Must it be Spain?
I've been checking fees on the stretch of French coast calles Cote Vermeille, which is the some 30 NM long and starts at the Spanish Border. I found that Port Vendres was not very expensive, I would pay the same as in my actual marina in the Netherlands @ approx 2000 Euros a year. And Winter charges are much less than summer charges.

happy sailing

Some people clearly don't know where Alicante is!!! Almerimar is at least 70 miles away! Try anywhere south of Alicante, as there are loads of marinas. Santa Pola, Torrevieja, San Pedro del Pinatar, Tomas Maetre (not sure on spelling!!), Los Nietos and Cartagena, all of which is on the Costa Blanca. Almerimar is on the Sol! A good website is www.barcos24.com which has a listing of marinas. Good luck though as it is pretty busy down there at the moment!!!

Well since your going to get shirty, Mr ccscott49 - There are 23 (approx) ports and marinas of varying size between Alicante and Almerimar, all of which are nearer to Alicante than Almerimar is!!

Further to earlier posting: You may like to try Torrevieja. It is very close to the town, with very good public transport around the district and also regular bus services to Alicante. There are many liveaboards there, and there are many bars and restaurants in the actual marina with chandleries and related services all within spitting distance (or a stones through may be a more polite way of putting it!) The town is large and growing, but it has its own charm! Alicante is prettier! I would think that anything one could possibly want is all close at hand. There are also many of the liveaboards who do car runs to the airport.

The only downside that may be a problem, is that the marina (in its wisdom?!) is selling off many of the berths, but as you only want to overwinter it may not be a problem, as there are a lot of of private berths that come available. The office seems to come up with non private berths as well, and I think it is cheap. 12M berth is £1400 for the year. While it was pretty full last year, I know of several of the "over winter" boats who have now moved on of their own decision, so there is likely to be space for next winter.

It is tricky if you want to stay there long term, but I would have thought for a winter stop it is a possibility. Depends whether you think the price is cheap (I would be interested if its not!).

There are a lot of marinas in the Mar Menor, which may well be cheaper, but it gets pretty dead down there in the winter! so you would have to choose carefully. I remember Los Nietos in December looking like something out of a spagetti western with tumbleweed blowing down the main road, and a lone thin dog slinking about, and no-one around!!!!

Good luck!

Can you clarify where you tried in Altea. There is the marina at Altea town and a mile or two north is the private marine of Campomanes (also known as Greenwich marina) I would expect Altea town marina to be reasonable.

Try Calpe. They have had a lot of people/boats leave due to prices so you may get a bargain, alternatively, try Denia. Its just over an hour North of Alicante and has been expanding its yacht facilities.

Interestingly, the Costa Blanca is extraordinarly quiet at the moment with marinas half full and little traffic. Got back yesterday and there were more people about in Feb!!

I don't need anybody to defend me, thankyou! But I wasn't "having a go" at anybody. It was just a suggestion and like I said I've managed to read charts for quite a while now and find myself around the world. So you can stop now, eh!
