Alex Thomson - Another Great Stunt.

Aside from anything else, it's just fabulous marketing beyond anything I've ever seen in *any* sport. I say that as someone previously sympathetic to Bill Hicks's view of the marketing profession. Has any sports person just wearing or using a sponsor's product ever had the same impact in brand promotion as Alex Thomson's stunts?

I await some examples of "extreme cleaning" from Mike Golding.

David Beckham?

David Beckham?

Which product are you thinking of? I know he makes a truck load of cash on product endorsement but without googling it I couldn't tell you what he endorses. Do I notice what kind of suit or watch he's wearing on a night out with Posh? No.

When Alex Thomson walks on a keel or parascends from the back of a race boat wearing a suit you notice that he's wearing a suit, and the brand name emblazoned on the sail and hull leaves you in no doubt as to what brand it is. Excitement, glamour...it's all there. Genius. Might be better if he looked a bit more like Becks and a little less like Boris but you can't have everything.

Mr Thompson, 43, an accountant from Cheam said "I was doing my new eco-friendly commute when I passed behind this fella, and inadvertently got caught on his mackerel feathers. How was I supposed to know he was fishing when he wasn't displaying the correct markers? By the time I got myself disentangled, I'd travelled 10 miles past my destination and was half an hour late for work. It really has been a most traumatic morning."

I've no idea what Hugo Boss is, but that stunt was excellent! One of my acquaintances is a 4 times kiteboarding world champion, I'll ask her what she thought of it.

I'm not just imagining it am I?

David Beckham has successfully promoted many products, increasing their sales greatly. You seem to be disqualifying him and others, from your personal awards scheme because of that. Alex Thomson has successfully promoted a single brand. Why does that make him a better marketing resource than others? I would venture to suggest that he isn't a household name.

Hugo Boss supplied a lot of suits in the 30s and 40s, you could get them with both brown and black shirts.

I was disqualifying Beckham because I couldn't think of anything he endorsed even though I knew he must get a huge amount of money from lots of luxury brands. You are however completely correct: I'm not everyone. "Beckham" is a huge global brand. I Am Not A Marketer but doubtless putting anything next to a picture of Beckham would work. Alex Thomson isn't a household name even in this country (though I wonder if he's more famous for the stunts than the racing?). I could post-caveat things but you're right. No matter how brilliant the ads are, sailing is a minority sport.

After confirming what Kelpie just posted though I think I'm leaning more towards Paul Smith for today's sartorial choices.

I think you're probably right abou AT being more famous for the stunts. Hugo Boss won't mind that, of course. Let's hope he wins the next Vendee Globe, and becomes a household name. :encouragement:
