I needed a new Heat Gun, I bought one yesterday from the wholesaler where I normally go and with my discount (as a shop owner) I paid £11.19 Plus VAT.
But today ALDI are advertising an identical Heat Gun for £9.99.
ALDI may be cheap but to me the disadvantage with them is they don't carry enough stock.
When they had Electric Scrapers recently the sold out the same day.
What we need if for them to have a website where like Tesco you can do a "click & collect"
(A message to the ALDI chairman: Don't stop. !!!)

They need a quick stock turnover to make the low prices pay. It also means that people know that they have to buy now, or go without. It's unlikely that they will be changing their business model just yet. You may have to change your buying habits if you want to take advantage of their offers.

Lidl have heat guns this week too. http://www.lidl.co.uk/en/our-offers-2491.htm?id=310&ar=1

Aldi have cordless multifunction tools from tomorrow and other useful tools https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/thursday-12th-june/

The offers are to lure you into their shops so you do your other shopping while you are there.

Some good prices for some stuff compared with JS etc but you have to watch the quality and not get carried away.

Had some nice stuff, chucked other stuff away!

Will tell you later how strawberries at £1.49 compares with JS's at £2

In that case, they fail dismally with me - I love their tools and have a garage full of them, but I would never do my food shopping there.

Why on earth not? Much of their food is as good as anything you can get elsewhere. You need to be a little selective with their fresh food and the choice is more restricted but for many things they are as good as the big names and sometimes better.

Last time I tried, most of it ended being chucked - even the cat and dog walked away...

In Ireland, Lidl's meat and vegetables are all sourced locally, as are their dairy products, and the fresh fruit is as good as in the major multiples. Their frozen foods are as good as can be found anywhere else. Their own-brand processed foods are sourced from the manufacturers of similar branded products but I find their tinned meats and soups a bit dodgy. I would have the same opinion generally about Aldi, but they do actually seem to carry more branded products. We very seldom visit any other major supermarkets , except to buy one or two things the Germans don't have.
Needless to say I also have a shed full of tools from both:)

I think what RM says is true.
Sometimes you can get the same brands as from Tescasdabury's at much lower prices.

Got to be prepared to be selective but I must confess its a helluva lot easier and quicker to go to the nearest branch of one of the big 3 and buy everythng in the one place. Thats the reason nearly all my shopping is from JS. Its the nearest big supermarket by a good few miles.

Sometimes Lidl's special offers lure me in and i then buy some other stuff that's on the JS shopping list.

Its the special offers that usually end up by being the disappointments...

SWMBO said that the Lidl strawberries were fine.

A big brown beetle crawled out of my JS raspberries though !

 Lidl. Best ginger biscuits in the UK. Cheese biscuits better than Jacobs. Locally-sourced meat and veg. UK-sourced milk cheaper than all major supermarkets. Eggs. Excellent strong flour for baking bread. Chopped tinned tomatoes. The best plain chocolate bars in the World. Good quality soft cheeses. Top-notch frozen veg. Good quality fresh fruit and veg. What's not to like? Does a Tesco till roll offer status?

The other thing about the cut price people is that they just offer everything at a clearly marked price. None of the 3 for the price of 2 offers which are a PITA.

Agree regarding the twofers and 3fers. Real PITA when you live alone. And JS's bluddy cash back scheme, Cut the fecking prices in the first place. One week I earned 3p off my next weekly shop!

One item I have been buying regularly in JS at 5 for £3 ( ie 60p each ) are 34p each in Lidl !

A very big +1 on that. One of the main reasons why I have stopped using other supermarkets and shopping at Aldi is quick. There are several of their own brand products usually from the Specialy Selected range that i prefer, that range is still cheaper than other supermarkets own brand. I don't buy their cheaper food ranges.

Good point - I hadn't thought of that. As many have said, don't expect the widest ranges, the more specialist foodstuffs or absolute consistency of availability, and be selective - but with care you can be very pleasantly surprised, and not just financially. Just a few examples: the chocolate is indeed very good (try the cherry and chilli), and my small-ish local brewery's ordinary (a very decent 'everyday' ale) is always in at 99p - when our local upmarket supermarket does have it, it's £1.30 or northwards. I expect that young families on tight budgets in particular can save a lot on non-food essentials like toiletries, nappies etc., too.

I was initially sceptical - and certainly we would not do all our supermarket shopping there - but I can quite see why the business pages often report the problems of mid-range competitors. They're in a classic squeeze, and I don't think things are going to go back to square one as the economy picks up.
