Exactly, the apps are useless for navigation, merely toys.

Or maybe worse than nothing...

However, it is nice to use to see if you think it worthwhile buying a real AIS (I did and it is superb, despite the pilot cutter not showing up today and an anchored ship only showing once she was making way!)

Maybe the AIS is set to ignore anchored vessels or vessels that don't pose any threat? There are usually user adjustable parameters in the Alarm or General settings that you can alter to change what is visible and what triggers the alarm.
