AIS on Navionics ipad...

Latest version of Navionics App on both iOS and Android supports a SDK (software developers kit) so any app developer can display Navionics data in their app as long you have Navionics installed on the device....

I suspect you still need a standard AIS receiver capable of spitting out 38.4Kbaud (NMEA0183) AIS to a bluetooth device which can relay to a phone/tablet with Navionics.??? Or SDR radio doing the same translation.?
??? Just get an AIS engine which you can feed direct to your plotter?
Much easier.

Can't justify the cost of £500 plotter.
I have:
£100 10 in Samsung tablet
£5 ebay rugged case
£30 heavy duty kiosk mount
Navionics App
Boat Beacon App
Still got change out of £200..
My only issue is that the charts in Boat Beacon are not great...
One day i'll buy a Wifi enabled AIS Receiver or Transceiver the prices are coming down fast on theses.
There is lots of demand for AIS on Navionics.

Wont any ais over wifi work?

When DY first released the AIS app it was free and intended as an adjunct to their iAIS product. However you could set the port and protocol it used and yes it would work with any AIS-over-IP source.

They must have sussed freeloaders like me were using is to test free/open source stuff because they started charging for it. Fair enough because it was a decent enough little app.

Without the exact figures in front of me: 10 inch tablet from London Chart plotters [fantastic service!] [with every UK and close Europe chart included] £130 ish, Marine Navigator App with AIS overlay included; £7 ish and an AIS wireless receiver from Quark Elec; £60 - works for me.

In theory you can use the iAIS app with any AIS transponder that sends its data via wifi.
I tried it, but with mixed results:
- I could only get GPS data into the iAIS app - AIS targets were incomplete and appeared only for a short time. No fault of the transponder, because I could check the AIS reception with my other iSailor app.
- The app tends to freeze, if the link is enabled that lets you see the incoming NMEA data (where btw the screen showed it was normally connected and data was coming in)
- The navionics map you can import into the app should be a current map, that is registered on the navionics site. So older maps don't work.
Bit disappointed by the Digital Yacht guys - it doesn't look like a stable app.
So we are still waiting for Navionics itself to enable AIS overlay. If they will ever do that, now Garmin has bought them.

I’ve been considering buying on of these
http://www.yachtd.com/products/wifi_gateway.html

I’ve only got one e7d display on my boat and at times could do with another to separate things out a bit but short on space and without the hassle of installation and this yacht device looks to be just the ticket. Says that AIS messsges are sent through the WiFi as well - my AIS setup is provided to the e7d via NMEA from a standard horizon vhf...

I’m wondering whether I’ll get AIS to work on the app using this.

Just saw that a couple of weather routing apps are now compatible with Navionics and display AIS targets. Probably more will come but we already have Sailgrib on Android and Avalon Offshore on iOS and Android.

Just got back from a trip. On the long leg from Lowestoft to Scarborough I started the Navionics boating app on my Ipad and noticed the little green ships on the chart and blimey it was AIS !!! I have a Vesper 8000 and the ipad had picked up on its wifi output with no input from me ( although I had already installed the Vesper Watchmate app). The only down side was the very high rate of discharge of the ipad battery which seemed to be higher than the input capacity of the 12v charger
Well done Navionics in improving their product radically !
What we need now is some tide optimising software for journey planning
