I have recently purchased a Netherlands Flagged Boat that I have changed over to SSR and would like to know how I can change the Flag that is shown on the AIS information.

OFCOM will issue a new MMSI number, you will need to update your VHF and AIS kit, manufacturers usually will need to do the alteration and will make a charge.

When I purchased my current boat somebody had transposed the MMSI number on the AIS and I was Swedish until I managed to get it changed.

My AIS is programmable using a laptop connected by usb cable. There I can make it say whatever I want within the parameters of the system. Surely most do that (I don't know this only assume it).

Varies from unit to unit. Does your allow you to change the MMSI ?

Did some work on a boat with a Furuno AIS a few weeks ago and it had to go back to Furuno for any changes, even configuring the output port to send data to the plotter !! Luckily i found a back door. Later models of Furuno may be different.

Some AIS have a hack that can be used to change the MMSI, search online for hints as to how to. I bought a secondhand Matsutec 33A, searched on line and found someone had discovered that by doing a factory reset, the existing MMSI number was deleted and you could then a new one. Apparantly you can do this three times with the “older” 33As, guy posting wasn’t sure about newer models.... otherwise it’s a trip to the maker or local agent to get it changed.

I don't think you can change the country of registration flag which will show on the web AIS monitors. All you can do is insert your MMSI number and the websites will pick up the flag from that. You could spoof the system by inserting a fake MMSI number which will generate a fake flag but I would not advise that.

The first three numbers are the country code.

253 is Sweden I discovered
235 is one of the UK numbers.

That's how I knew a previous owner had transposed the figures.

I recently bought a new 33A for China.
When it arrived the MMSI was set to a Chinese tanker!
I did a factory reset and programmed my own MMSI with no issues.

Unit is excellent value for money (basically re badged Furuno)

Thank you for all your replies. The two VHF's on my yacht are Navicom RT550 and it looks like I can input a new MMSI when I get back to the boat next week.

What about the AIS transmitter? The majority of those don’t allow you to change the MMSI without manufacturer assistance.

(In the US it’s a legal requirement that individual boat owners not be able to set their own MMSI number; their dealers have to do it for them at purchase and thereafter it’s unchangeable.)

I am still looking into what I need to do to remain legal. Apart from the two VHF radio's, I also have a Raymarine AIS that may prove to be more of a problem to get changed. If I have to send all three units back to the UK from Spain, It may be cheaper to re-register the boat back under a Netherlands flag.

Just been contacted by the previous owner who fitted the VHF's and the AIS unit and he will put me in touch with the company who fitted the units, so they should be able to help with the changes.

Once again thanks to everyone for their valuable input.

This is supposed to tell you how to change the MMSI in you NAVICOM DSC RT550 VHF But I don't speak french.

Looks good - procedure seems fairly straightforward. Between the pictures and the English words from the radio, it should be intelligible even to a non-speaker :)

May be but not having a navicom radio I did not look at it in detail.

If it had been in Afrikaans I may understand it better !!! Very little french this end of Africa so please don't shoot me

Is it a Class A or B transmitter?

Will find out when I get back to Spain next week. I am totally new to AIS & MMSI so I do not know the difference between A or B transmitters. The last yacht I owned had Decca and the one before that only had a hand held RDF. (it's been a long time away from real sailing) LOL. Between then and now I have had a sports boat for inshore use and used a VHF without DSC and a GPS.

This will explain the differences
