Aeroplanes/Mobiles/Centrino(Non Boaty Question)

When you fly the cabin crew make a great thing of turning off mobiles. Doesnot always work, a few weeks ago on a flight from Cairo to Milan we had just landed when all you could hear from some prats bag was his mobile ringing!
Does it really effect nav equipement or anything else?
If somebody decides to use their Centrino Notebook do you need to disable the wireless free bit, or does that really not matter either?
If they cant successfully police the use of mobiles how are they going to go on with Centrino types?
I realise that you are not allowed to use notebooks until cruising height is reached but the it does make you think this is maybe another reason for avoiding flying.

Absolutely - I've been on two planes where amobile spooked the avionics - one was a private plane the other a commercial.

Mobile phones do affect some systems on a commercial jet. If we have to make an announcment that we will be 30 minutes late landing, within 2 mins we get spurious readings for Pressurisation and some electrical systems. This is obviously caused by everyone phoning up saying "I'm going to be 30 minutes late"
I think the main reason for not using Laptops until the a/c is "stable" is that with all the bouncing around at low altitudes they would be flying round the cabin. There is no other reason I can see because we have all the systems active however high we are!

Clear as mud! What about using gps aboard? They don't transmit, so should be safe? Got a real bollo**ing last time I used one on board

GPS's are fine, Whenever we go away and I am not flying I allways go and get the flight plan from the office and load into our Garmin 12 so I can see where we are going/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

This leads me onto the story about how I navigated a 747 with hundreds of innocent passengers onboard for 1000miles accross the Atlantic with my Garmin 12. I'll tell that story tomorrow.

OK so mobiles have some effect on certain types, but what about wireless free with a notebook? If one of these people, who insist on looking important with their machines in full view, has wi fi then if you go over a "hotspot" and it starts talking to ground control is that also going to be a problem? Are you now going to have to make an announcement to make sure they are disabled?
FYI mine is not centino and stays in the locker cos I am usually snoring most of the flight!
As regards your other post about navigating across the Atlantic with a hand held - now that sounds a little scary!!

Good job my Fathers not around to hear it !

I know my Brother with a certain 'ex' CIA airline was using Trimbles to fly 'mercy missions' over NE Africa some years ago ....... but that was with food drops etc.

But I think advertising the GPS 12 on a 747 could be putting yourself out for some s---t !!!!

A gent from Riga to London ...

One of my recent flights - BA from Riga to London.

Please sir can you switch your Mobile phone off .....

Click. Stewardess moves on with a Thankyou Sir. Click he switches back on.

Stewardess wandering back sees it again ..... Please sir can you switch ..... click.

She moves on again ..... click.

By now she's keeping the proverboial eye on him and moves in for the kill !!! Sir do you mind if I take that and place it in the locker ........ gent refuses. Things are getting interesting and she insists - finally he gives in and she places it NOT in the locker above him - but in the aft one where she has her bag. He is one mighty p-------d off guy.

Now - my thought at the time is I have seen quite a few times BA cabin crew get stroppy about a few beers and we all know the story's of BA refusing passengers etc. (Ok there were a few lout incidents and I agree with BA on those). This guy was 'stupid' to the extreme ........ why did'nt we turn back and dump the guy ----- we were only just taken off from Riga.

I wouldnt want to be on that flight - given you're in an Aluminium Faraday cage, I doubt the range would be more than 50m or so. The only aircraft that I know of that regularly fly that low were the old Buccaneers - due to their wing configuarion they could fly in ground effect. In the annual shindig around Edwards base in the desert they would drop into ground effect, intruduce full reheat, push stick forward and watch the F16 jocks bottle out as they tried to line them up. Apparently they were just subsonnic at full bore when in WIG mode - and trailed a dusty cloud 10 miles long...

Well - by the time youve got extra landing fees and loss of slot I can see them wanting to carry on - I guess it's also possible that they might have been to fat to land, and needed to dump some fuel, and then refuel on the ground.

But you can see my point ?? Stupid b'd - I just sat across the aisle from him and couldn't believe the stupid sod was doing it !!!

It also looked like he was a 'seasoned' traveller - as he buckled staright up without having to sort his buckle and clip first etc.

I have to admit that I am not a fan of BA - despite years of my father extolling their virtues etc. when they were BOAC and after ..... sorry but I tend to find them snotty and over-full of 'emselves. I much prefer the smaller a/lines that struggle against the ever growing monopolies by talking to you as a human being and actually trying to do all they can for you. (Actually the average large US carrier across the pond / international I used to find was the worst - along with good old Air FRance !!!!!)

I know its not easy looking after a load of berks who are bored stiff for hours ...... but giving a quick drink, tray of re-heat grub and then disappearing is not on. Particularly when I pay full whack for my tickets - not Bucket Shop specials !!!!

Sorry - but air-travel is a pet hate of mine - I enjoy the 'thrust on take-of' - I really hate the bit inbetween !!!!

Gulf War 1 - Bahrain

Having watched Jags, F-15's, A-10's, Tornados beating up the desert through GW1 ........ it was time for me to go home via Bahrain.

Sat in departure lounge looking across runway.

First out was the K-tanker lumberng out.
Followed by the Jaguars .... a group of 3 taking off in formation, pulling a hard turn and up away.
Then a couple of Tornados who decided to show a near vertical pull up from runway..........

but the REAL STARS ..........

A trio of Bucaneers blasted down the runway, wheels folded up and they literally stayed at same height ..... they went along that runway in perfect formation and then gracefully pulled up into a formation barrel roll that had the whole lounge cheering and applauding.

To be British at that moment was proud and the "old Lady of the Sky' - the bucanners were showing that they were not finished quite yet ............. fantastic.

It was a bit disapointing to sit on the DC-10 after that ......

Perhaps it's because the Buccaneer started as a Navy plane - have to do these things with a certain amount of style, don't ya know old chap.
