I have to sell my Nicholson 38 remotely because of ill health and wondered whether it’s possible. The boat is on the hard in Grenada but I’m unable to fly out to meet any prospective buyers. It will have to sold on an ‘as is where is’ basis. I can use a broker of course but I thought I should check out the possibility or otherwise of selling it myself first.

Any thoughts?

Use a broker. But you need not use the first one you knock across...if it is vat paid UK is it worth getting it shipped back to UK.?

If you can manage it get someone to go to it and empty it and clean it so the brokers will get a good first impression that will probably help them to believe the boat will sell.

Sorry you have to sell your boat. Not a good position. The market for that sort of boat in that location is very limited and the value of the boat probably does not justify shipping it back here where you might have more luck finding a buyer. As you probably know Boatshed and Clarke and Carter have operations in Grenada. so probably best to talk to them as at least if one of them takes it on the boat will get wide exposure on the listing sites.

Many thanks. One of my family will fly out to clear out personal belongings and meet one or other of the brokers. The boat is not worth much in the Caribbean but it means a lot to us after sailing it happily for twenty years. Someone is going to get a good boat for not much money.

Get hold of Rosie Hoggarth at Clarke & Carter. She's a Brit based in Grenada and has been around those parts for a long time (it wouldn't surprise me if you have met her and her husband, Sim, during your time in GND).

To sell it privately, there's the awful, awful option of Facebook, but be aware of all the scammers on there offering scammy purchase offers
I bought my boat after seeing it on Facebook marketplace, but all contact was done locally with the previous owner and nothing done through facebook, I knew of where the boat was and through the boat club they reached out to the guy and we met up.

I listed my telescope, a 10" Meade LX200R, on facebook marketplace and sorting out the scammers and timewasters was a pain and almost made me give up, I had tried other 2nd hand sites but apart from an offer to split the package up nothing came of it, 2 weeks before this christmas I did get a genuine enquiry which led to the sale, all in all it took over 2 years to get it sold. I got what I wanted out of it and the chap got a good telescope for a fair price even though it was nearly 20 years old.
