If I wanted to buy a motor boat (c.30-40ft) and moor it in a Spanish marina, what qualifications/experience would I need for personal use?

Also, what qualifications would a skipper need if I wanted to offer the boat for charter with a skipper.

Any advice would be appreciated.

L.

Have you looked into the availability of a berth in a Spanish Marina, I understand they are few are far between!
Sorry I can't help further, you will probably get a good response on Monday when everybody comes back after the weekend.

First question is what country will it be flagged under?
If UK flagged
For your own private use international certificate of cempetence, but check with RYA.
To charter there may be local bye laws to operate a business, some places have different requirements on investement and employment. But for UK flagged you would also have to comply with MCA code. Boat needs to be coded, and the code gives manning levels and qualifications for taking paying guests. The code is actually a usefull and thorough safety check document covering all installations, equipement etc. The qualifcations for the skipper vary depending on the use of the boat. If your thinking about it get a copy of the code from the MCA and have a read.

In a nutshell - don't. It has to be Yellow Coded if UK flagged. The Spanish authorities require a matriculation tax in order to charter. Spain is over-subscribed with foreign boats looking for a bit of charter work and not complying with any regulations.
