For the last couple of years a group of us have been chartering for a week at the end of May out of Dubrovnik. They have been very successful, with flights early on Saturdays that have allowed us to get away by lunchtime.
However, we feel we have done as much as we can from Dubrovnik. We'd like to try Split but we can only fly there on Thursdays and Sundays and all the charterers start on Saturday. Has anyone tried getting to Split or Trogir from Dubrovnik? Is it possible?
Alternatively, what about Montenegro? Is it any good for sailing? There was an article in Saturday's Times talking about it being the new goto place for the super rich. Given the price of Korcula marina, I dread to think of what they might charge. Can you anchor in nice coves with cheap restaurants?
Any advice would be much appreciated
 
Just been to Split for a weeks charter from Manchester - early morning flights means should get away from the Marina about 3pm on the Saturday. We went with Flybe for £175 return.

First time sailed this area - Split is a great city so no issue if holed up there Saturday night and start early on Sunday. Lots of large lovely islands but not many marinas in comparison to further up the coast between Zadar and Sibenik.

That lack of marinas combined with dozens of unbouyed bays is what I most like about it

Indeed....it was more for information than a complaint.

Mind you Marina ACI Split (our charter base) has extraordinarily narrow channels between the boats and makes for some interesting viewing once you are safely tied up with a cold beer to help get rid of the sweat!! Probably designed when 35 footers were the norm and not 45!! Bow thruster used the only twice during the week getting in and out of there!

Marinas? Who would want to go to a marina... there are gazillion coves, anchorages and the like.

I also thought the space between pontoons was rather narrow (British understatement).

Also: don't leave it to the last moment of Friday night to refuel at Split. It is crazy.

My crew of delinquents (sorry middle aged men) required a watering hole or two and some views every night!! If just me and Mrs Mad or two couples then a very different itinerary would have been undertaken.

We fuelled up in Trogir on Friday morning (one boat wait) and sailed most of the way back to avoid the late Friday fuel party!

We did a half-Montenegro fortnight from Dubrovnic a couple of years ago (as I mentioned on the "Med tides" thread). OK for a week, given Kotor is an ancient city like Dubrovnic and Split and maybe therefore worth a day of your time. But not somewhere to go for the sailing. The entry process (and exit) was rather onerous and expensive; perhaps they have smoothed it a bit by now. Or maybe charter within Montenegro.

We've sailed a lot in Croatia and also visited Montenegro separately with a hire car. I'd agree, nice place but not somewhere we felt an urge to sail. Kotor Bay is stunning but seemed to lack much in the way of places to stop/moor (being essentially one big bay) and not the little town quay and bays we've found around Dalmatia.

In summer the catamaran ferry from Dubrovnik to Split is about ~4hrs/£25 I believe.

What about flying to Pula? There seem to be Edinburgh flights on Saturdays and there are charter bases in Pula and Medulin, if memory serves me right.
