adjustable table pedestal

I am looking for some kind of adustable pedestal for a tabe for our pilot house.

We have replace the bench seat with two small seats with a gap in the middle for a table. We want to be able to drop the table down to fill the gam so we have a long bench again, or raise it to se can use it as a table.

The pedestal needs to be about 15 1/2 inches high when collapsed.

I could go see local fabricator and get a pair of tubes that slide inside each other and some kind of locking mechanism -- probably a pin through the tubes, but swmbo wants something more swish along the lines of gas lift office chair. or a wind up/down job.

Any suggestions?

I've search for pedestals on ASAP and a couple of other websites, but no luck

Why not get a heavy gas strut chair that has a good metal base, remove the rollers on the chair, remove the chair top and disable the lean back mechanism, then attach a table top. Hey presto, a gas strut style table! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Sounds like a great idea but all of this in stainless or ali??? The average office chair would rust to bits in weeks.
