Hi,
I had exactly the same symptoms on my AD41. My fault was not the earth lead, but poor volts on the switch to the starter motor.

I cannot remember exactly the numbers, but the switch to the starter needs to be >10Volts. I sorted out the cable from the switch to the starter motor - that then gave me the full 12Volts + to the starter motor.

I hope what you think is wrong is the problem, if not, take of the signal wire to the starter and measure it.

Best of luck mate.

Me and Sea Start have checked all the positive cables to and from the start and bypassed it with a jump lead and it didn't fix it. Only by passing the earth let me start it on the key. It must be this earth cable as i can't think of anything else it can be.

Either way I'll know by this time tomorrow for sure

After another sweaty 30 mins i changed the cable and so far all seems well.

I've cut open the old cable and can't see anything wrong at all but it must have been the fault as it's all working now.

Excellent news.

Have you pulled the lugs off the end of the cable ? Usually it’s where the air and moisture get to the copper
