AD41a\'s what to look for

Thanks for all the help on the Sealine 305 querys, have now decided this is the way to go after having a look at one the weekend.
one I looked at was owned by a diesel mechanic and was the usual, engines purred rest of the boat had holes everywhere, broken anchor light and was generally uncared for.

Looking at the lumps though opened my eyes to the fact it wasn't going to be quite as easy to mess with as my current mercruiser 4 cylinder petrols so does anyone have any advice as to what I should look out for and what I should run a mile from?

Cost to replace engines £40k
cost to replace nav light, upholstery, carpets £5 k

If the engines were cared for then the tatty one has to be worth another look.

Some smoke more than others especially when cold. I would make sure you see them started from cold otherwise great engines and no more maintenance than your petrol in my opinion.

how much smoke is normal and is there a giveaway to the colour? how long should the smoke take to clear and will it clear at river speeds?
Know these are probably silly questions to the expierienced but the thought of 20 year old engines costing 20k a piece to replace is keeping me awake at night.

Re: AD41a\'s what to look for

If you do a search there have been many posts re smokey volvos and as ive learned from my 41s and advice from this forum the 41a is the worst. This was improved with the 41b and 41p. There are many things you can do to minimize the problem ie properly serviced, injectors checked fuel additives etc but in all honesty if i were choosing a river boat i would avoid 41a,s if they are anything like mine. Once fully warm and up on the plane no prob.
Also dont loose sleep re re-engine costs 20k is from Mr Volvo
i have looked into re-con costs and your looking at about 5keach. Gool luck.

Thanks Steve and if the weather ever improves would like to take you up on the run out to sea, my current one is yet to venture outside the fenced off area let alone the next one.

Re: AD41a\'s what to look for

I have 41s on my boat and myn are really smoke free
a Volvo mechanic told me from 1993+ built engines it improved due to emision restrictions

as for the smoke in my experience if you put the boat up slowly definitly it will smoke much less if none
