I'm working on my stanchions, so I brought a broken umbrella with me and did this:

The first nut I took off fell into it, so it works!

After a tip, I used one when I needed/wanted to change a prop on a drive whilst in the water - works a treat - caught my pliers.

Absolutely. Contrary to the common saying, a decent sized golf umbrella can have many uses on the boat as well as on the way to the pub. There is an upright tube fastened to my pushpit, originally to hold a home made danbuoy and now commonly used to stow a boathook ready to grab. In harbour it's great to set the umbrella in it for a little shade in the cockpit and as already mentioned it can also be dropped into the open companionway hatch to keep drizzle out. Very useful to work on deck fittings when it's p+ssing down - have you noticed how it always runs down the back of your neck just when the work gets tricky?

Anyone have a fishing umbrella - even bigger and with an articulated head - just think what that could do!

Rob.

How else would you BBQ in the rain? I have also used mine for motoring, even sailing, in showers. Can add an extra knot when going downwind in the dinghy or as a spray deflector when going upwind. Myriad uses.
