mmm.. starboard side for the view surely, if you're going down channel and across the 'pond' as most of the cruise ships did when the phrase was coined.

Being on the 'Sunny side' each way was how it came about....

This is purely a guess... but spelling has always been very flexible in the English language, at least up until the last century or two. I wouldn't be surprised if 'porthole' is actually a corruption of 'portal', meaning any opening such as a gate, door, window, etc.. This word is I believe common to most languages which descended from Latin.
