I think that it was some sort of generator starting up, it was cold & still so the black plume lasted a long while. It might be that the person that gives you an accurate explanation, they might have to shoot you afterwards

I seem to have less ropes than you have Fantasie 19 so I can go faster
The tower looks in better condition in your picture than it looks now. There were a few workmen working on it but the only one wearing a yellow tabbard (not life jacket) was fishing !
