A rebuild thread to keep you all happy for the long winter

I've had excellent results checking rpm using an android app (RPM Gauge I think was the one I used), try it! no stickers and squeezing on the pulley side of the engines either!
Just state strokes (4 unless you're on DDs  ) and # of cylinders. Obvs you fire one engine at a a time, you'll be impressed, easy and accurate!

Yes, I use that app but it has disappeared from the app store and has to be downloaded from the web Source: Download.it https://share.google/SaGRzFVNTGuxoGZFN. BUT, for best results in the setting you should set the upper and lower rpm expected so for an idle check enter 500 and 1500

Bit of an update but in truth…..running out of things to fix on the boat so bought something else to fix

I nice little 2 stroke for my 3D 290 tender. Free of charge from a great mate so set to having a look. It pulled over but turned the prop. Oddly though, it would go in forward gear but the prop still span freely and wouldnt go in reverse! How very odd! Time to investigate!

Pulled the lower and undid the oil drain. Nothing came out…not a drop…..oh dear. Deeper we go

Now im no engineer…..but im pretty sure thats not right! Oh well, it was free so next step was see if it’ll run. It did on the 3rd pull! Sounded good enough so decsion made. Im going to buy a bottom end. Interestingly, this is a yamaha with a mariner badge. Parts are super easy to find and given a whole replacement bottom edge is £135 delivered….its worth a punt. Ordered a whole new carb as well for £25!

Just one mothership job this week which was diesel heater fuel supply. It was set up with a 25 litre outboard tank setup lose in the lazerette complete with fuel priming bulb! Not ideal at all. I like the separate fuel supply as the heaters are a bit fussy in fuel so stayed with it and replaced.

Finally, I think its important to share what you know in life so I’ve taken on a new apprentice.

Hes not been that helpful as yet and has been moaning about the uniform so we shall see how it goes

I'm sure the apprentice will soon get the hang of sitting on what ever it is you are working on .

That outboard looks alright! Bit of paint and good as new.

Does anyone know if a plastic diesel tank for a heater is ok for boat safety certification on inland water ???

Dont know why they wouldnt have put a standard on fuel lines. 5mm ID proper marked hose is like £5 a metre. That green stuff is rubbish. My soft line goes into hard line before the heater too which is good

You planning to fit one K?
Can't decide. The boat came with a separate stainless tank for the heater but its really badly installed. Filler hoses have a loop that traps water, breather hose too short and upside down breather so water gets in etc etc. Will probably take it out and see if I can re install it better. If not I have a plastic tank like yours. My prevarication is partly to do with the deck filler. Some idiot cut the hole in the deck too big, didn't seal it and water gets in around it. Unfortunately to get it out meant damaging it and I cannot find another deck filler that will work - screw centres too small. So I will need to repair the deck, cut a new hole etc. However if I take the tank out I still need to repair the deck.

Bit of a first world problem really.

My heaters both run from the starboard tank. No faffing around filling tiny tanks every five minutes. If your fuel quality isn't good enough to run a heater you have a problem that needs urgent sorting.
