A new website

I think the site is superior to 99% of sailing blogs, but only when you get past the loading (7 seconds looking at a red spinner !!).

The winning attributes are (in order) the text, the graphics, the photos; what causes me to shriek is the loading and the very clunky mouse navigation. It's like turning the steering wheel of a car and finding 2 seconds later that the vehicle responds.

Content 5/5
Accessibility .....

Your right Sarabande about the loading .. I just updated the theme and it has caused a few problems which I am trying to sort out at the moment. I do still need to do some things about the first page so your feed back is very welcome. Thank you

Thank you Lady.. I will look at that as well.
Thank you for all your comments.. it really does make a difference to the way I look at the site as I want to make it intresting and easily readable for others.. thank you

I have a very high speed link
and the site was excruciatingly slow, it must be the servers you are hosting it on. I cannot comment on the content/navigation as I gave up waiting

I am trying to resolve issues between chrome, firefox and the servers which may be why it is slow at the moment.

Having started the UK's first Web design company don't use black as a background, only white. Don't use pop ups - crew, photographs, maps and The Sygnus blog - most people block them, use links.
Also it is mind numbingly slow it seems, looking at the code (open the home page then click on 'view source') it is easy to see why, you are using extremely complex code and lots of plug ins to produce each page rather than simple HTML pages. Scrap what you are using to code the site and get an HTML book and text editor, I use Textpad. If you want to keep it really simple use a picture on the home page (say your boat) then a link to all the pages, that means just two clicks to go forward and back , many sites have more links and are a pain.

You could use the code below as a templates but look up what style css is. An edited sample of what a text page should be:

We moved on board Kelly's Eye on April 14th, this was about a week later than originally planned
but we had realised in mid-March that we weren't going to 'make' the earlier date. To anyone
reading this who is thinking of doing something similar, don't underestimate the time it takes to
organise everything - whether it is letting a property, sorting bank accounts, inoculations,
notifying relevant parties of a change of address or chasing pin numbers for cards! We did start
organising some things, such as passport renewal last autumn and we're very glad we did.
It all takes longer than you think. Once we were no longer committed full time to our jobs, we
worked solidly on this for two months, only taking one day off to do a couple of things we had
promised ourselves before leaving London.
<P></P>
We've been really lucky with where we lived in London and our neighbours saw us off with a great
nautically themed Leaving Party, which also allowed us to introduce our new tenants to everyone. Thanks to Simon
and Candy Waldram for that, especially as they were about to go on holiday. Our belongings went
into storage the Tuesday after Easter and we then spent a relaxing and welcome evening with Mike
and Jacque O'Keefe (also neighbours), it was great, so thanks also to them. The next day we
cleaned the house and packed the Jeep with the last of the gear for the boat.
There was a bad moment when we thought we wouldn't fit everything in but Mike's packing
experience, gained when he skydived, solved the problem, just.
<P></P>
The next ten days were spent settling in, unpacking the car and stowing everything in the space
left from previous car loads. We also had a meal with Mike's parents, Desmond and Winnie, and his sister
Angela and brother-in-law Ian. The four of them also came and saw us on the boat just before we
left. Angela and Ian left with the Jeep, which they very kindly undertook to sell for us.
Then we were ready to go.
We split the passage into three legs: Burnham to Ramsgate, about 40 nautical miles;
Ramsgate to Portsmouth, 120 miles; Portsmouth to Plymouth, 130 miles. Mist, fog and not much wind were
the themes, including thick fog going through the Goodwin Sands. We had thought long and
hard about adding radar and in our view it has already paid for itself.

KellysEye,
Thank you so much and I agree, if you want a simple fast site you can write yourself then doing one like this is the way to do it.
The trouble was I found a lot of sailing websites very similar so I wanted to make something different. It has to be responsive so it can be seen on tablets and phones as well as PC's. I wanted to try some new ways of doing things and showing things but I am totally illiterate when it comes to coding, design and media in general. I have never worked in that industry.
Using wordpress for me was a very steep learning curve and I am still at the bottom. I have some problems at the moment with the theme and chrome, firefox that have appeared after the latest update and to be honest I would't know where to start to look for the problem. I cannot afford a specialist so buying a theme which is relatively cheap means I get free upgrades and assistance when things do go wrong.
Even with a very, very basic site I would have problems so this way I get to play around, get things wrong, learn something and have fun.
I really do value your help and input though. thank you

There should be.. I will look at that thank you DaveRo
Did you try moving the screen down a bit to see if they appear

Yes, I tried and no, they don't appear. Same on Google Chrome which is the default browser for this Nexus 7.

I remember how it was supposed to work. I tried it a few days ago on desktop Firefox and the menus were fixed. It is much faster today than then - not quick but not terrible.

A couple of thoughts. Most visitors to my blog (and there are not many) arrive by googling a place - 'Khalkis' is popular for some reason. They don't start at my homepage but navigate from whatever post they land on.

I follow a few sailing blogs, mainly people I've met or who are sailing in the same area. I do it via RSS and I rarely see the site itself - just the latest post. I'd have to have a very good reason to follow a blog that didn't have such a feed. I don't know whether your blog does, but if so my Android feedreader can't find it.

Thank you again DaveRo...
All this website stuff is beyond an old git like me but I will try and sort it.
What is your blog Dave as I would like to have a look
I have added a RSS feed now (I think)..

Force 6 to 7 here today but we are having a mellow year.. won't be leaving for a month and then Tunisia and Sardinia.
Don't suppose you have time to get further..could do with a good barbecue on a nudist beach again, good drinks, food and falling in the dingy. I still don't think the South Africans have recovered.

Unfortunately not Mark, won’t make it much further than Majorca.

Work commitments are still my priority with the 2 boys in Uni, but 3 years to go now, so it’s getting closer.................. can’t wait.
