Re: A cat or mobo which is it for me??

I couldn't see Talbot's comment about leeway but it rather surprised me. In my experience once a cat has a decent amount of

Talbot did say underway there ok it was leeway when hove to or stopped!Just the word helped me understand

Have you done enough sailing to evaluate the options?
Everything's a compromise so best go out and get more experience then: charter a catamaran or a gin palace, a gaffer or a sports boat for a week or two, then come back and ask again. But aim your enquiry at those who, for one reason or another, have changed from sail to power or vice versa (yes, there are both) - they are the people who know the soul-searching that robbing Peter to pay Paul entails.

Ah now thats a point! I dont indeed have any writen sailing qualifications i just potter about!!A real beginer then?

Just now im useing a Bertram 28 which is a mobo? Great turn the keys listen to that noise! motor out point at the destination full throtel then go below to read a book!!When the GPS beeps go up strech and motor in to the next port(??)

Indeed my folkboats only a means to learn to sail its so difficult!!Sometimes the whole boat leans over!!I just dont know why?could it be dangerouse?with a 6hp outboard the folkboats just soooooooooo slow and if the wind would blow well it wouldent move. And the sails just flap about makeing a dreadful din!!

Ill look for advice on where i can gain sailing experience.Do you have any suggestions as your someone we should all look up to and learn from as you have so much experence?? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

When I think about it I have never seen you sail that folkboat of yours actually. You were always already in port when I met you and still there when I left. You could as well have had her towed there! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

James,
Catalacs predate the long aspect ratio keels introduced by Prouts and now standard on most cruising cats. The Catalac hull shape is great for safety but unless you are moving at a reasonable speed, will give you quite a lot of leeway. actually, this is quite useful, because it is a great indicator that she needs a reef!

The lars keels also provide great directional stability, which does make it easier for a newbie to helm.

I dont know what pills chuggin is on, but reckon he needs to change his doseage.

Quite agree about Catalacs. In was the all-embrassing nature of the comment that puzzled me.

Incidentally, although Catalacs had/have a modest reputation for performance in general and upwind in particular, Mary Lack used to get hers to rumble along at an incredible pace in events like the Round the Island Race. There seemed to be more to it than just being an excellent sailor. I never managed to get her to tell me the secret of her success.

I have managed to get mine round the island (unofficial entry) in 10.7 hrs, however Mary was an exceptional sailor. The 8m is faster in light winds (same waterline length, but 1 ton lighter so that is not a surprise) If I could have been bothered to change my sails I would have been quite a bit faster.

This year, I gave up at Bembridge.
