I took ownership of my new (24 yr old) Sadler 'White Magic' at the Friday. SWMBO joined on Saturday so we had a couple of days to find our way round her and connect and fill the flexible water tank. Very pleased.

Sunday was blowing a bit but after some consideration we decided to sail to the Crouch, partly because I didn't want to keep paying Shotleys' berthing fees. Started engine (Bukh 20), plenty of water from the exhaust, and waited to lock out. We locked out and motored as far as the third lightship when the engine died and wouldn't restart. Out with the genny, sailed up river a bit and got the anchor down upriver from the Deben bouy. I took the engine cover off and the engine was very hot. Radioed the marina to see about a workboat coming out to give us a hand and was told 'not until Tuesday!' The Felixstow volunteer inshore lifeboat came by and offered to help out by towing us back in. I assured them that we weren't an emergency and gratefully accepted. They towed us alongside and right to the berth we'd left an hour before. They're on my Christmas card list and we made a decent donation to their charity.

An hour or so later the engine started and ran fine, which, to me, points to the thermostat. Unfortunately we've had to leave the boat there while we get the machanic to look at it, all of which will cost a fortune. So it goes, I suppose.

I don't think I can really blame anyone, the survey only covered a visual check of the engine and I did the usual engine checks and ran it up before I took possesion so I guess it's just one of those things.

Then the water tank leaked into the forepeak. I suppose I'd overfilled it Not the best maiden voyage but as swmbo said, it beats the Titanic and we're still alive (though likely to have a severly bruised wallet soon!) /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

And next week I've got to figure out how I'm going to sail her round by myself and get back from Hullbridge to Shotley to pick up my car. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Slow-boat,

Not quite sure why you think the symptoms are those of a thermostat problem - surely the engine would just overheat and possibly sieze up.
Bukh engines do have a overeheat warning alarm.
There could be many reasons of course, but I had similiar problems with a bukh caused by crud in the fuel blocking the fuel line from the tank gradually starving the engine of fuel. However after an hour or so the fuel seeped past the blockage and engine re-started only to fail again in 15 minutes. Check the fuel filter to see if it is dirty- change it anyway. Keep plenty of spare filters because if the tank is dirty the problem will recurr and if this is the problem the only real solution is to remove teh tank and clean it out or replace it entirely, which you might as well do once you have got it out !

Regards

Andrew

Oh dear - these things seem even worse when it's your new toy. It may not be very serious and at least it has told you to fix it early on rather than somewhere awkward in bad weather.

I am free Thursday and Friday next week (away until Wednesday evening) - if you would like a hand then PM me.

Best way to Shotley by public transport is to get the train to Harwich Town station and then walk round to the pier and get the foot ferry across to Shotley. You need to ring the ferry first to make sure you get a seat. Phone number and timetable HERE

Good luck

Well, I'm no mechanic, it just seemed to me that overheating = thermostat. Thanks for the advice.

I'm about to phone the mechanic at Shotley and listen to the sucking of teeth! I'm hoping that the brokers will help out with berthing fees as a goodwill gesture but I'm not holding my breath!

Now I'm worrying that the water tank wasn't just leaking where I over filled it and by now has leaked the rest into the forepeak. Paranoia is taking over!

MoodySabre, thanks for the offer. I may well take you up on that. I depends on what the trouble is and getting Friday off, which may be a bit of a problem as we're starting a new operation on the first September and it will be all hands to the pump. I'll keep you all posted.

You're right. It would have been a lot worse to have engine faliure bouncing around off the Naze or trying to get through the Wallet Spitway, which would have been a bit lumpy on Sunday.

Oh, and swmbo managed to get a quite bad burn from the oven when she was cooking me a 'cheer-up' dinner in the evening. Let's hope that's the three bits of bad luck dealt with.

Seems to be part of the course.

Previous boat - delivery cruise Nieuwpoort-Ramsgate.
Engine overheated. Sailed/drifted our way accross. Motored the last half mile in.

Current boat - delivery cruise Ostend-Ramsgate
Engine cut out 15NM out (full blown electrical failure - no cranck shaft). Too deep to anchor (23m and only carried 25m of chain at the time)
Informed Dover Coastguard we were adrift (no wind) - they sent Ramsgate Lifeboat for us as they judged us to be dangerously close to the TSS and the tide had turned. Didn't argue.

Duncan,i was sailing around that area on Saturday and Monday, unfortuneately i decided to explore the Deben on Sunday /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I did call out several times on my hand held VHF on the saturday for white magic as i wanted to come over and have a nosey,

what a bummer buddy i could have towed you in,if only

i was sailing up and down the orwell on saturday, tried to call you on vhf a few times but as you were in Dover i guess my hand held does not reach that far, sorry to hear about your engine woes

If you are stuck for road transport at all any time before you get sorted out, do shout - I live in Herne Bay, so not far away and may be able to help with a lift. Emailing the webmaster thro the website below gets to me quickly.

Such a shame Duncan. I also happen to think it is fuel starvation though. Do check the overheat alarm by boiling it attached in a kettle.

Not you too ? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
What's this thing with hankie boats and engines ?
Anything I can do to help, you know where I am
