A biker story - they\'re out to kill us

Driving in traffic minding my own Business thinking of the weekend Boating.
Parked car indicates to pull out and I stop to let him out.
He moves forward 1 car space and then at the same time indicates left and reverses.
I hoot, he doesnt look and he reverses into me.
He then waves at me to move, but my wheel is trapped under his bumper.
He eventually gets out of the car, whilst blocking all the traffic and tells me to move.
I tell him I cant and he says "why were you so close"
I say " I was'nt til you reversed, so move forward and let me go"
He moves forward an inch and then jumps out of the car to see the damage, banging his car door on a passing vehicle.
Any guesses what car he was driving?
Roll on Saturday

You were too close, and centred on his bumper -you should have been able to avoid him, by being further away, or of one side of his centreline. Sorry mate. I did despatch risding for three years in London, and loads of bikers wer/are in hospital blaming the car driver. Not saying he wasn't an idiot, but you should be ready for them, and assume they are all idiots. Almost no bikes drive 75 feet from a car at 30 mph, and skills are noticerably lower now with lots more part-time bikers avoiding the congestion charge. You need to polish up you skills at guessing what a car will do next, and it's not too hard to guess the hesitancy when a reverse or other majort movement is coming up. And never ever think of anything except avoiding death - your of course. Good luck.

I was stationary, not much point in being 75 feet away in traffic.
I suppose I could have waited on the pavement for the lights to have changed and then asked an old lady to help me across the road!!!

ok, so why were you right smack behind a car? You can always align yourself a clear route fwd or back, to one side of the tinware. Frighten them up a bit with horns, lights, not many do. Get through to the front of the lights - your space if at all possible and pull away sharpish. No problem using the pavement - if it saves you or the bike, imho.

sorry, this a bit harsh, hope you are ok! But the driving test etc does not teach any of this, a mate was a rubbish biker, had a few prangs then became an instructor! he didn't have a clue about protecting himself, bullying cars, forcing spaces by weaving or double dodging to move lanes or anything else.

cheers

I have ridden tens of thousands of miles on bikes but gave up a generation ago as the family came on.
After some twenty years I had a go on a smallish Yam, full throttle takeoff, it all came flooding back, heady stuff, then soon afterwards my daughters wonderful partner was killed in the middle of the day on a country road.

Take care friends, you are very fragile....

Trouble is, the only sensible response is to get a load of metal round you - like the 4WD Mums taking their offspring to school. But we know that, and we still ride. Until something truly horrific either kills / maims us or someone near to us.

You'll not change the idiots driving around, and even with the best defensive riding someone will get you sooner or later. Thats not a reason not to practise it - just a recognition that its only a partial answer.

Had an old woman (80 if she was a day) driving toward me down a residential road, high kerbs, suddenly veer to the right, blinded by the sun. She got to within 3 ft of my kerb. I couldnt mount the kerb, I would have fallen off. When she veered, I was already too near to swerve round her left side, and way too near to do a uuu i. Luckily, I just scraped through with a clash of mirrors. She never stopped. I did - shaking! All I saw of her was this neck, wrinkled like Norah Batty's stockings, as she tried to get out of the sun.

So good luck. Keep the right side up! And avoid Volvos driven by grey haired old men.

You'd be amazed how effective a Glasgow Kiss can be from someone wearing a full face lid...
