Just remembered, in Portimão there is a charter gaffer that does tourist trips. Happened to look at her mast from a bridge and noticed it was steel tube with FABLON wood effect wrapped around to look authentic........

Should have gone to Lagos instead; the Bom Dia is all wood.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There was a Ketch here in Cardiff Bay last year that used steel pipes for masts she was about 100ft long, cant remember her name, but according to her skipper she was a cargoe boat (motor) in the west indies and he and his wife converted her to sail for charter and sailed her back to the UK.

A metal mast on a gaff just ain't natural. Lulworth was launched with a metal main mast, but only because they couldn't source the wood for a proper one. I don't recall ever reading about Britannia ever having a metal stick. Maybe when she was converted to a J...

50 foot is a fine size for a single mast. Look at all the bristol channel pilot cutters, they're all around that size, single masted, and the easiest boats to handle out there. You've just got to have everything set up efficiently. And roller reefing is a fantastic asset.
