Re: backwards?

What explanation do you need.
Like John, I have tried to tow boats with dinghy. It's imposible going forwards. Dinghy just trys to turn round. So I finished up towing it backwards. Dinghys can also be very usefull for docking. Bit like having a bow thruster. Just bash into boat with rubber, not steel dinghy, and push. Other way is to push from behind. But cant see where going.
Nother way is to lash dinghy to side of boat, turn up power and steer from big boat. We did this once on Windermere. With our National Ospray sailing thingy. No wind at all on way back, so lashed kids dinghy to the side. We had miles to go. Everything was going well till we got to the most uninhabited part of lake. All of a sudden the dinghy broke loose and went round in a great big circle. Out of sight at times. Then we would hear it coming back. Eventualy seeing it and trying to paddle (with hands) to where we thought it would pass us. Anyway it went round about five or six times. Finally it got quite close and son took a masive leap, Luckily landing in the dinghy. So that was OK......../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: backwards?

humble apologies I had not realised (reading quickly in flat mode) to which post you were responding...sry
I had this vision of the dingy 'strapped on the side' backwards.......which was almost as amusing as you caption /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

so, strap it on to the side forwards or tow with it in reverse - does it for me

bow scrap bow ....exits on knees........

Re: let\'s get real....

I've got the 4hp four stroke Mariner with a Bombard AX3. Only got the mariner because the shop gave me a deal. £300 brand new in the box as he was closing down. The little engine does sterling service on the dinghy. I leave it half deflated on the engine cover/aft deck of the boat. The kids tend to use it more than me and take me to the pub in it more than anything. The youngest is quiet a dab hand now!

Check out this deal please

Listened to all your advice and have been given this offer :-

A Zodiac C240 for £456 (4'8" wide x 7'11")

Or

A Zodiac C260 for £490 (4'11" wide x 8'6") (£34 more than C240)

A Mercury (black cowling) OR Mariner (grey cowling) 3.3hp either for £399
(apparently underneath the badge they are identical engines)

Free delivery

Bearing in mind my Transom is 230cm wide, if for any reason I had to tie it on the back which would be safest?

I think I will forget about the naff rear engine mount and just use the tender as a barge if necessary and shunt it along. Thank you all for your very kind help, if you think this offer is crap please don't be shy to tell me. I think that with the weight situation, safety gear, wife e.t.c. I have had to look for lightish things.

The engines weigh 14kg and the C240 21kg, C250 is 22kg.

P.S. The reason I opted away from Tohatsu was the service centres and parts problem, limited places service them although I agree they are good little engines.

Re: Check out this deal please

I wouldn't worry about the service centers for Tohatsu, very little to go wrong and usually just a change of spark plug needed, although I haven't changed the one in my Mariner 4 since i bought it 7 years or more ago. Servicing is easy, most of the time just dab a bit of grease on all the moving bits
under the cowl, and if you're really unlucky a change of the gearbox oil.

So put the Tohatsu back on your list! And what about the Yamaha Malta? Great reputation, if they still do it.

What about the Zodiac, apparently it is FRENCH /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif, well at least it's not the engine that is french, that would be no good without any 'guts' in it, would it /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Can't remember whether Avon bort Zodiac or the other way round, either way it's only half French, so probably ok.

Put Weaver Snap Davits on the transom. Far neater than trying to lash it on. It's going to work like a parachute either way, so best you stow it securely (we had a 2m inflatable on the back of a Maxum 2300, and that used to catch the wind something terrible).

But like someone said, wait until after the May weekend. There should be enough boats around to let you walk from the Hamble to Newtown Creek so you won't need a safety boat, and you'll probably see every combination of engine/tender around.

Re: Check out this deal please

Graham I had a look at them on the web, a good idea, but I don't think my boat is high enough, I wouldn't see out the back!! I think I will just have to inflate and deflate or tow it if we are just pottering about up the river.
