2nd Hand Yachts

Re: 2nd Hand Yachts & fees

My boat was ashore when I bought her - due to work I could only sail her away on a Saturday;
it suited the boatyard / broker (same company) to put her back in the water on the Wednesday.

I was then CHARGED 3 nights berthing fees for a boat I'd bought from them !! Outrageous!!

However, they forgot to add the anti-foul to my bill and because of the berthing fees I kept quiet and decided we'd called it quits!

Gee, and I thought we were the only one's with lousy boat brokers.

I remember going and looking at "bristol condition" boats that were "garbage". At least according to the brokers the boats were "bristol". I got so disgusted that I started telling brokers that if they used the words "cruise ready" and "bristol" and the boat wasn't....
well, I'll let you wonder about the rest of the conversation...but several brokers told me that I probably shouldn't waste my time looking at the
boat......

I'm not sure what the exchange rate is....but you might want to check boat prices over here..... might be able to find some good buys.

I ended up buying the boat I have directly from the owner....and got a fair deal on it....and it was exactly as it was represented. Good condition though needing alittle work. To buy a boat equal to mine brand new, I would have to spend $178,000.00 US, and
I spent far less than that for a 26 year old boat that had been pretty well taken care of. I have alot of room to make improvements and
upgrade systems before I get anywhere close to the new boat price.

Due diligence and a good survey (wet and dry) are important, very important.

Try using the YBW "Buy a boat" site. I bought a beautiful 36 foot motorsailer for nearly half the original asking price. Draw up a list of suitable boats but be flexable.. If you are determined to own a particular craft you are going to limited by choise.
My list of 12 boats (all from the YBW) site, on viewing turned up 3 that I seriously considered. I bargained hard and am very happy with my purchase.
I have never bought a new car or boat and never would. Likwise I have never had a "duff" one of either, but I think you have to be confident that you can see both thro the layers of dirt. or even more importantly the layers of polish

Re: 2nd Hand Yachts & fees

Boat prices are indeed loads cheaper in the US. I went to a boat show at the big LA marina (del Rey ? something like that) and was staggered at the prices.

I then got in touch with Customs and Excise and found out that by the time you add VAT and import duty it's not worth it. You've also got to get the boat back across the pond of course...

Boat prices are a great deal cheaper in sweden too especially for
27 footish 15-20 year old .. I would think something like a Vega
is about half the cost in UK . and it's in eu and its about two week
sail home.

I could not agree more. I see the need for a buyers guide that has teeth, in a similar way to those that give buyers information re car prices and conditions.

Vendors should not waste people's time by mis-quoting the condition of a vessel. Whether they be private or brokers. Perhaps its time for legislation to be drawn up and enforced in a similar way to that applied to estate agents, who always seemed, until legislation, to have trouble measuring the size of a room.
