20 years ago this month...

This current version of the Forum only started in 2001.

I first joined in about 1999 following the demise of the Sailing Today Forums - I think there are one or two old friends still around from those days
Remember forumite "Violetta" from '98 - '99, previous YBW forum version ? In 2001 we all had to register again as the old forum version had been fully abandoned towards this newer format one, all counters, registration dates etc were reset.
Or was it "Petronella" ? Many years ago indeed, memory failing.

I think I have a vague recollection of a Petronella.

...I bought this and joined the YBW forums at the ripe old age of 34. Is there a long service award? Hands up if you remember GC1 and the toaster or Gludy and the Trader fiasco!

No iPhones back then; this was taken on my bleeding edge Nokia N70:

I remember Gludy. He and his lovely partner came aboard my boat for two weeks in the Caribbean back in around 2008. I'm not surprised about the Trader fiasco. He never met anyone he couldn't fall out with in very quick time.

Think I may have been around here since about 1997. I'd just done a standing rigging change and someone wanted to know what order to reattach their own stays with their mast dangling from a crane.

With my probably misplaced confidence, I laboriously set out the procedure.

I'll spare you the details, can't remember anyway now.

My previous account dates from when I was 24... over 20yrs ago! I was locked out of it when I lost access to the associated email account.

Do I win a prize for biggest percentage of my life w̶a̶s̶t̶e̶d̶ spent on here?

Violetta. One of a group of us who were on the original site but abandoned it for greener pastures around 2000. A group of us actually had a sailing get together on ACB's boat down near Mersea Island in 2006. Violetta and ACB were sort of local, Marsha was from Boston,Mass., Jan was from Belgium and I was passing through on my way back to Chile. Jan and another early member , Lobo from Austria, later came sailing with me in Chile.

What was funny about the early days was that so many boating enthusiasts drifted in from across the boating spectrum, curious about this new fangled, interactive forum/yachting magazines interface.
A bit like Sailing Anarchy, there was a far wider breadth of experience and commitment. A bit like Sailing Anarchy
And of course you quickly recognised your mates from down the creek, with or without their mab or shiny new monica.

I was here intermittently many years ago but in this iteration, only since 2022.

As for baud rates until 1988 part of the equipment I worked on worked at 110 baud. I know that was still in use till 1993.
We were told we'd never get broadband here, we were on 56k system but rarely made half that. But about 10 years ago the dug a trench the 4 miles to the other end of the village. That end they are on fibre, this end 3/4 mile away, but this end with a copper telephone cable buried just 6 inches under the verge we on a good day get 27Mb.
