What's the best way (and the easiest product) to fit a depth sounder to my boat as it hasn't got one? I intend to fit this on my boat whilst it's out for anti-fouling, which leads to my next question, best anti-foul paint for a boat that cruises at 25-30kts and has a top speed on 45kts (rarely used!). Location, North Wales. Not too bad on barnacles but estuary water does grow lots of slime and weed.

Thanks in advance chaps

easiest must be transom mounted??,but prone to no reading at speed possibly? (mine does that, but it's only submerged a couple of inches & works to 15knots ok).

I fitted a faria from asap-supplies, but mainly 'cos it matched the other instruments.

We used a great anti foul, it is a polished surface, sort of gloss instead of the normal matt. Our boat is spotless underneath after a full season of use.

Have a look <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mad-als.com/temp/af.jpg>http://www.mad-als.com/temp/af.jpg</A>

Obviously this has been steam cleaned off, but last season when it was steam cleaned we were left with loads of missing anit foul.

This stuff is supposed to last two seasons and requires one coat after the first season.

Our boat is a 22 - 25 knot boat and it works well.

I will ask my Dad to post where he got it.

Well as I say, honest to God, that is one full season in the lovely clean waters of the Solent. I was gobsmacked when I turned up and saw her so clean. They guy on the phone said it is great stuff and will last us two seasons, I thought yeah right.... But he was right.

We will give is a very light sand and one coat for next year and that should be it.

Ooops.....forgot you'd moved up to the Windy, think transom mount usually for smaller stuff.

Dave,
for the depth sounder dont go the transom mout route the transducer gets damaged and sometimes aint in the water.

Best bet to keep it simple is to mount inside the boat I have just done this with a Piranah II (which is a fish finder but with a great depth sounder-two functions for the price of one!) good price and the transducer is mounted inside in the bilge onto some vaseline. Check out the Garmin fishfinder as well I think they are also doing great prices.... try here for both:

It works beautifully

Yep. Get a through hull fishy thingy. But fit it when boat is in water. Use Potters method or a bag of water which my bloke used. Might have to try a few places before geting best results. When you are satisfied, stick it down . But be warned. There must be no air between sender hull/ water.

Our through the hull one doesn't work above about 15knts - presumably due to air beneath the hull. Anyone know how to get around this other than telling me to slow down ?/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Get a bigger bottom /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Think your bound to get air under in a small boat. But lets face it, deapth sounders are for creaping about in shallows. Not bombing around with, bleep blee...........................................crunch!!

Where is the depth sounder located, maybe if you moved it closer to the stern?

Probably not in the best position.Mine works fine all speeds. It could be somewhere where aerated water is getting under it.
When I helped Jon Bailey fit a fish finder, it was jury rigged to battery and display, put transducer in plastic bag of water, and tried it in all different places .Jon driving, me holding transducer. It's amazing how even small changes in position can make a huge difference to performance

Yes you're probably correct as it is on the keel line but just forward of the engine (sterndrive outfit). However, it is also a stepped hull design whose raison d'etre is to aerate the water/hull interface in order to reduce friction. So a through hull transducer may not work at all with this type of hull.

The only problem with our method was that although it works well at low speeds as tested, above 10kts it is a problem. Certainly you would need a calm day for someone to stand with the engine bay open with a bag of water on a stick whilst going at planing speeds.

Brendan: Did you ever get that FLS fitted?

I've got an Eagle with a transom mounted "skimmer" tranducer. Never had any probs with it at all. Works at all speeds upto 35knots with no problems. Only prob at that speed is that what your "seeing" is what you've just passed.

I suppose the best bet is to slow down if you are unsure of your depth... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

This is the stuff:

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.boatpaint.co.uk/acatalog/Boat_Paint_Catalogue_Seajet_Antifouling_76.html>http://www.boatpaint.co.uk/acatalog/Boat_Paint_Catalogue_Seajet_Antifouling_76.html</A>

It is very important to get the undercoat on correctly first. It is purposely designed for planning craft as it polishes itself as you blast along.

We spoke to a guy called Edmond, told him the length and model of our boat and he sent us the exact right amount required.

Hope this helps.....

My hull is stepped also, with all sort of laminar flow interrupters and other very strange looking things to maximise aeration. Still get perfect results even at full whack.

You hit it on the head Barry. By the time the instrument has gone beep and your brain has registered the fact, you will have hit that rock/sandbank/etc. If the water's deep enough to do 35kts you don't need to know how deep it is. Transom mount is fine. If it doesn't work over 10-15kts, so what? You're a nutter if you stick the power on in unfamiliar waters where the chart shows dangerous shallows, IMHO.

Bill.
